O yes! Heejun, 'Idols' bring judges to their feet

After a tough performance last week, Heejun Han received a standing ovation for his act Wednesday.

?You have to give this much to the nine remaining finalists on ?American Idol? ? they aren?t making it easy to vote them off. Singing songs from their own personal idols seemed to inspire everyone to greater heights this week.

Granted, that?s partially because the judges were in an especially generous mood on Wednesday night, giving no fewer than five standing ovations on the night. None, however, was more surprising than the first.

Heejun Han had been getting increasing criticism for the perception that he wasn?t taking the competition seriously. After being in the bottom two a week ago, he played it straight and sang Donny Hathway's ?A Song For You? well enough that he even won over Steve Tyler. No small feat, considering last week the judge looked like he was ready to leap up and wipe that smirk of Han?s face himself, old school.

?He-Man, you did it. You did it, man. You turned it around,? Steven said. ?When you have a voice as good as yours?... you make it come alive.?

Very surprising. And very well-timed. Another joking performance and he?d have been the obvious choice to go home, but now it?s anyone?s guess who the unlucky singer will be.

Making it especially interesting was that two other singers who have been in trouble this season --?DeAndre Brackensick and Elise Testone --?likewise won high praise. The judges love themselves that Brackensick falsetto, and he got every opportunity to use it while singing Eric Benet?s ?Sometimes I Cry.? Then again, the judges have always loved Brackensick, and the voters have typically shrugged and said, ?Not so much.?

Testone closed the show, and did so with an energetic cover of Led Zeppelin?s ?Whole Lotta Love.? People who love Testone really, really love her. Trust us ??we see all of the tweets. But it also bears repeating that she?s already been in danger a couple of times and a singer like her has never won ?Idol,? or even come close to doing so.

The other two honored with the standing ovations were Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips. Phillips was a little surprising in that he sounded pretty much like he sounds every week. Not that that?s bad. He?s always going to sound good doing a Jonny Lang number. It wasn?t anything different from what we?ve already heard.

Ledet covered the Mariah Carey version of ?Without You? and?... well, the judges liked it more than?we did. He didn?t oversing, and Randy Jackson always appreciates any opportunity to remind everyone that he knows Mariah Carey and has her cellphone number, but it was a big song that he didn?t quite pull off. Unless you?re listening with J.Lo?s ears. She called him ?an absolute angel from Heaven.?

Jessica Sanchez and Skylar Laine did not get the standing ovations, but deserved them. Sanchez has already shown she can belt out the high notes, and showed Wednesday that she could give an understated performance as well with a slowed down version of Beyonce-as-Sasha-Fierce?s ?Sweet Dreams.? Laine sang Miranda Lambert?s ?Gunpowder and Lead,? and is a good bet to stay around as long as people continue to like country rock. Though really?... Miranda Lambert is Laine?s idol? She's the one? Doesn't that seem hard to believe?

That leaves Colton Dixon and Hollie Cavanagh. Dixon makes no secret of the role his faith plays in his life, and he picked Lifehouse?s ?Everything? because it?s his favorite worship song. He did it well, but we?ll see how the voters respond. Cavanagh went with ex-"Idol" Carrie Underwood?s ?Jesus Take the Wheel? and did fine, but was the worst of the remaining women and at some point, the judges are going to have to demand more from her than they have thus far.

The finalists also took the stage a second time as three trios singling medleys. The less said about that, the better. If we?re going to talk about time-wasting filler, how about the pictures of a young Jimmy Iovine rocking out with guest mentor Stevie Nicks three decades ago? Believe it or not, at one point in his life, Iovine had long hair! Also,?we can?t believe for a minute that people have asked Jason Derulo if that giant neck brace is an accessory. Even Tommy Hilfiger wouldn?t have suggested that look for a singer.

At the end, no judge was willing to cite either favorites or those in trouble. ?I think tonight was a magical mystery tour of over-the-top talent and emotion,? Steven said.

That?s going to make for a very interesting results show. With everyone doing well, will the same singers who were in trouble a week ago be back on the bottom again? That would be bad news for Han and Brackensick, as well as Testone since she?s been among the lowest vote-getters before. It could also be bad for Dixon, who sang first, or for Cavanagh. We?ll find out Thursday which of the singers who moved the judges so much didn?t inspire the viewers to get out of their seats to vote.

Zsa Zsa Gabor's daughter files for conservatorship

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Zsa Zsa Gabor's only daughter asked a judge on Tuesday to place her mother in a conservatorship that will independently control the ailing glamor queen's medical care and financial needs.

Constance Francesca Hilton claims Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, has been isolating her 95-year-old mother and leaving her heavily sedated. She also questioned whether her mother's finances are being properly handled by von Anhalt.

"By isolating me from my mother, not only does her current husband deprive her of my love and companionship, but he goes against estate planning documents that appear to reflect her wishes that he not be in sole control of her affairs," Hilton wrote in a declaration accompanying her petition.

Hilton is asking the court to appoint her as Gabor's conservator, although her attorney, Kenneth Kossoff, said they would be willing to have an independent third party handle all oversight duties.

Hilton and von Anhalt have squabbled for years over Gabor's care. Von Anhalt blasted Hilton in a phone interview, saying his wife is comfortable and that he cares for her every night.

"It's probably her last card she's playing now," he said of Hilton. "It's all about money. She's afraid, her mother passing away eventually, and there's nothing."

Kossoff denied the accusation, noting that the establishment of a conservatorship would require a judge to review Gabor's finances and make sure all money is "being spent in her best interests."

"It would be a strange way to get ahold of Ms. Gabor's money," Kossoff said.

Von Anhalt said he welcomed the court scrutiny of Gabor's care. "I want the court to come and see what's going on," he said. "I want the court to see how comfortable my wife is."

A news release issued before the filing stated that Hilton has been waiting for a year for financial and medical information about her mother that husband von Anhalt has refused to disclose.

"While her husband has been having her see a cardiologist and has caregivers at her house, I am very concerned that her medical needs and treatment are not being managed in her best interest," Hilton wrote in her court filing.

Von Anhalt said he is acting in his wife's best interest and is forced to sell her Bel Air mansion to cover his wife's debts and medical bills. He said expenses amount to around $30,000 a month, even though Gabor's monthly income is only $6,000.

Hilton, he said, "doesn't want me to sell the house."

Kossoff said any sale of the mansion should be handled through the conservatorship proceedings.

The first hearing on the matter was scheduled for May 2 before Superior Court Judge Reva Goetz, who also oversees the conservatorship of Britney Spears.

Big earthquake rattles Mexico, no major damage

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A major earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, unleashing panic as it damaged hundreds of buildings and caused homes in the capital to bounce like "trampolines".

Office workers fled into the street when the 7.4-magnitude quake shook Mexico City for more than a minute. Cell phone lines went down, buildings were evacuated, traffic snarled and the stock exchange had to suspend trading early.

At least 11 people were injured, the Interior Ministry said.

The quake hit hardest in the southwestern state of Guerrero, where around 800 houses were damaged, officials said. The state governor Angel Aguirre said he had reports of homes being knocked down, though state authorities could not confirm this.

The tremor was one of the strongest to hit the country since the devastating 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1985, which killed thousands in Mexico City.

Mexico's interior ministry said the country would remain on high alert for the next 24 hours after 18 aftershocks to the quake were registered. Some were above magnitude 5.

Still, no deaths were reported on Tuesday and there were major disruptions to air travel or to oil installations. But it scared many residents and temporarily cut off electricity to 2.5 million users in the capital.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said some rails of the subway system moved as a result of the tremor while leaks at three aqueducts feeding the eastern portion of the capital would leave hundreds of thousands of homes with no water for at least a day.

Martha Suarez, an Argentine living in Mexico City's Roma neighborhood said she had never known anything like it.

"My TV set fell over, the building felt like it was on a trampoline. This one was like no other I have felt before," Suarez said, holding her little dog close.

Scores of the houses damaged were in Ometepec, a town close to the epicenter of the quake in Guerrero, the state that is home to the popular Pacific beach resort Acapulco.

In neighboring Oaxaca, 68 mud-brick houses were damaged and at least five people were injured, one of them seriously, in the area around the town of Pinotepa Nacional near the Pacific coast, local emergency services said.

Some buildings in the capital's trendy district of Condesa were cracked by the earthquake, and residents raced out of buildings with young children and dogs in their arms.

"I swear I never felt one so strong, I thought the building was going to collapse," said Sebastian Herrera, 42, a businessman from a Mexico City neighborhood hit hard in 1985.

Television images showed part of a bridge collapsed onto a vehicle on the outskirts of Mexico City. Mayor Ebrard said no one was injured and that helicopter flyovers showed there was no sign of major damage in the capital.

President Felipe Calderon also said there were no reports of serious damage, and experts said the impact did not look severe.

Eqecat, a disaster modeling company whose software is used by insurers to predict exposure to natural disasters, estimated insured losses from the quake at less than $100 million.

Fear gripped many Mexico City locals when the quake hit.

Caroline Kloesel, a German executive working in the Las Lomas neighborhood, said there was a stampede when people started fleeing the eighth floor of her building. "At some point, we got stuck and everyone started pushing. A large man had tripped (on the staircase) and fallen down. And because he was very big, they couldn't help him stand up so everyone started walking over him," she said.

Mexico City's international airport was operating normally and only a couple of flights to the United States were temporarily grounded, a spokesman said.

State oil company Pemex said all its installations on the Pacific coast were operating normally, including the country's largest 330,000-barrel-per-day capacity Salina Cruz refinery.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was magnitude 7.4 and aftershocks continued during the afternoon.

In Acapulco, schools were evacuated and some parents rushed to pick up their children, but there appeared to be no major damage to hotels or other buildings.

The White House, which has declined to confirm reports that President Barack Obama's daughter Malia was vacationing in Mexico, said the 13-year-old was safe.

The quake was felt as far away as Guatemala City.

A spokesman for Mexico City's health authorities said hospitals and clinics were operating normally although some patients were evacuated from damaged buildings.

Smoking, the leading preventable cause of mortality in the United States, continues to disproportionately impact lower income members of racial and ethnic minority groups.

In a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health, Jason Q. Purnell, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, looked at how perceived discrimination influences smoking rates among these groups.

"We found that regardless of race or ethnicity, the odds of current smoking were higher among individuals who perceived that they were treated differently because of their race, though racial and ethnic minority groups were more likely to report discrimination," he says.

"In follow-up analyses considering specific types of discrimination, only worse treatment in the workplace was significantly associated with current smoking after accounting for other factors; individuals who reported worse treatment in the workplace were 42 percent more likely to smoke."

The study also found that people who reported better treatment in health care settings than other races were 21 percent less likely to be current smokers."

"It's important to understand the factors that promote smoking among racial and ethnic minority groups," Purnell says.

Analyzing a multistate, multiethnic study of over 85,000 individuals by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Purnell used data from 2004-08 from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Beginning in 2002, an optional module, Reactions to Race, was added to the BRFSS and adopted by several states in an attempt to capture data on perceived racial discrimination and its effects in a population-based sample.

"As expected, everyday smokers were more likely than occasional smokers, and occasional smokers were in turn more likely than nonsmokers, to report being the target of perceived discrimination in both health-care settings and the workplace," he says.

"Smokers were more likely than nonsmokers to report emotional and physical symptoms in response to perceived discrimination, although occasional smokers were more likely than everyday smokers to report both emotional and physical symptoms."

Purnell says the study highlights a potentially high-risk group of individuals who report feeling unfairly treated because of their race and who may be smoking as a means of coping with the psychological distress associated with discrimination.

"Identifying these individuals for targeted smoking cessation interventions may improve cessation rates," he says.

"Our findings also suggest that alternative forms of coping with discrimination may be a fruitful area of discussion in counseling interventions designed to help individuals quit smoking."

ABC Poll: Romney Beats Obama as President's Ratings Plunge

President Barack Obama's approval rating has plunged below 50 percent, and Republican front-runner Mitt Romney would beat him if the election took place today, a poll showed Monday.

The survey, by ABC News and The Washington Post, indicated that only 46 percent of Americans now approve of the way Obama is handling his job, and 50 percent disapprove as he took a hit from rising gas prices.

The situation was a reversal from early February, when 50 percent approved of the president's performance and 46 percent disapproved.

The survey was released as the battleground for the Republican presidential nomination moved to the deep South for primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday.

If the presidential election took place today, the poll found that Romney would beat Obama 49 percent to 47 percent.

The president was barely ahead of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is running second in the Republican pack ? 49 percent to 46 percent.

Previously, Obama held significant advantages over both.

According to the survey, the drop was attributed to soaring gas prices threatening to crimp America's slow recovery from a recession.

The American Automobile Association predicts that gasoline prices across the United States could average $4.25 a gallon by May, up from more than $3.60 today.

Between 1998 and 2004, prices ranged from $1 to $2.

Prices vary wildly between regions, however, and last week, gasbuddy.com, a website that tracks prices in all 50 states, reported $5.09 a gallon at one Mobil and two Chevron stations in greater Los Angeles.

Given that 76 percent of Americans drive themselves to work, and a trip to the store can often mean a long drive to the mall, higher gas prices are a critical issue ? especially in a presidential election year.

The polls also found 59 percent of Americans had given Obama negative ratings on the economy, and 65 percent disapproved of his handling of the gas price situation.

The telephone poll was conducted March 7-10 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Santorum's win in Kansas on Saturday, when he took 33 of the 40 delegates, was offset by Romney victories in Wyoming and in the U.S. territories of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands.

Romney has now won 17 of 26 state or territory votes, compared with seven wins for Santorum ? eight if you include a straw poll in Missouri ? two for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and none for Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

With 455 delegates, Romney has almost 40 percent of the 1,144 needed to secure the nomination. Santorum trails with 199 delegates and Gingrich has 117, according to authoritative aggregator RealClearPolitics.

This lead means Romney's competitors must win 70 to 75 percent of the remaining delegates, which are handed out proportionally by district in many states, in order to snatch the nomination.

"Uniting the opposition to Romney in a single candidate is the only chance, or the best chance, of seeing this process continue for a while," said Charles Franklin, a professor at Marquette University Law School.

"With Gingrich, there is also the question of when does dogged determination become a pointless crusade. Surely that point is coming pretty soon," Franklin, co-founder of pollster.com, told AFP.

Whatever happens on Tuesday, Gingrich has vowed to stay in the race all the way to the Republican Party convention, which will crown the eventual nominee at the end of August.

Santorum's campaign support group called last week on the former House speaker to quit.

"With Gingrich exiting the race, it would be a true head-to-head race and conservatives would be able to make a choice between a consistent conservative in Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney," a statement said.

Despite a bulging war-chest and a vast campaign team, Romney failed to seal the deal on Super Tuesday as doubts linger among key Republican voting groups about a candidate who would become the first Mormon presidential nominee.

Romney, who celebrates his 65th birthday on Monday, has portrayed himself as the underdog in Alabama and Mississippi, Bible Belt states where a majority of primary voters describe themselves as born-again or evangelical Christians.

Despite well-documented marital infidelities, Gingrich has done well in the south, winning convincingly in South Carolina and Georgia ? albeit his home state ? and recent polls shows him edging ahead in Tuesday's contests.

In Alabama, a Rasmussen survey Friday showed Gingrich leading with 30 percent, ahead of Santorum with 29 percent and Romney with 28 percent.

A poll in Mississippi by American Research Group showed Gingrich in the lead at 35 percent, ahead of Romney at 31 percent and Santorum at 20 percent.

Four-winged dinosaur's feathers were black with iridescent sheen

ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2012) ? A team of American and Chinese researchers has revealed the color and detailed feather pattern of Microraptor, a pigeon-sized, four-winged dinosaur that lived about 130 million years ago. The non-avian dinosaur's fossilized plumage, which had hues of black and blue like a crow, is the earliest record of iridescent feather color. The findings, which suggest the importance of display in the early evolution of feathers, will be published in the March 9 edition of the journal Science.

The researchers also made predictions about the purpose of the dinosaur's tail. Once thought to be a broad, teardrop-shaped surface meant to help with flight, Microraptor's tail fan is actually much narrower with two elongate feathers. The researchers think that the tail feather was ornamental and likely evolved for courtship and other social interactions, not for aerodynamics.

"Most aspects of early dinosaur feathering continue to be interpreted as fundamentally aerodynamic, optimized for some aspect of aerial locomotion," said Julia Clarke, one of the paper's co-authors and an associate professor of paleontology at The University of Texas at Austin. "Some of these structures were clearly ancestral characteristics that arose for other functions and stuck around, while others may be linked to display behaviors or signaling of mate quality. Feather features were surely shaped by early locomotor styles. But, as any birder will tell you, feather colors and shapes may also be tied with complex behavioral repertoires and, if anything, may be costly in terms of aerodynamics."

These findings also contradict previous interpretations that Microraptor was a nocturnal animal because dark glossy plumage is not a trait found in modern nighttime birds.

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Human Resources, the Beijing Academy of Science and Technology, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Other authors on the paper include Qingjin Meng, and Quanguo Li, of the Beijing Museum of Natural History; Liliana D'Alba of the University of Akron; Mick Ellison and Rui Pei of the American Museum of Natural History; and Jakob Vinther of The University of Texas at Austin and Yale University.
