Egypt's Islamist president gets to work

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president whose powers have been curbed by the military, toured his palatial new residence - where ousted leader Hosni Mubarak once lived - and began work on Monday to form a coalition government.

Declared winner on Sunday a week after a nail-biting run-off vote that pitted him against an ex-military officer, the Islamist faces the challenge of meeting sky-high expectations in a nation tired of turmoil while the economy is on the ropes.

But his campaign pledge to complete the revolution that toppled Mubarak last year but left the pillars of his rule intact will come up against the entrenched interests of the generals who have been in charge of the transition to democracy.

Shortly before the presidential vote, the newly elected Islamist-led parliament was dissolved by the army based on a court order and the generals issued a decree putting limits on the president's remit, which cuts into Mursi's powers to act, but exposing him to blame for any failures.

Further afield, his win has had an immediate impact beyond Egypt's borders, inspiring Islamists who have risen up against autocrats across the Middle East and swept to power in North Africa. Israel worries its peace deal with Egypt, never warm, will cool further. Palestinians in Gaza, however, are delighted.

Iran saw his election as an "Islamic awakening" - though Tehran and the Muslim Brotherhood follow different, often opposed forms of the faith. Its Fars news agency published an interview in which Mursi called for restoring severed ties to build strategic "balance". A Mursi aide said he gave the interview 10 days ago.

A security official said Mursi and his wife took a tour of their new home, once Mubarak's main residence - a dramatic change of fortunes for a former political prisoner whose group was pursued remorselessly during Mubarak's 30-year rule.

An aide said Mursi then went to the Defence Ministry for talks with the head of the military council Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and the army-appointed Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri for talks on steps towards forming a new government, a visit rich with symbolism about where real power lies.

As president, Mursi can appoint the cabinet. His aides say he has already reached out to politicians from outside the Brotherhood such as reformist Mohamed ElBaradei, who has yet to publicly respond. But legislative powers remain with the army while the parliament is dissolved, restricting his power to act.

One pressing concern - on which many Egyptians are likely to judge his performance - will to be to revive the economy. Monday's stock market rally, at least partly fuelled by relief that the vote and result passed off without violence, may encourage the new president, but he still has to prove to wary longer-term investors that Egypt is on the road to recovery.

Egyptian newspapers greeted Mursi's win over Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister, as a victory for the people, although many more liberal-minded Egyptians worry his conservative group will slowly whittle away at social freedoms.

"The revolution reaches the republican palace," wrote Al-Shorouk newspaper. Another, Al-Akhbar, quoted from Morsy's victory speech: "I am a servant of the people and an employee of the citizens". It is a sentiment widely spoken, this sense of, at last, perhaps having an Egyptian leader who can be "fired".

Celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square - theatre of the revolution that overthrew Mubarak - extended through the night. Some Brotherhood followers were still celebrating and a little surprised by their victory that broke a six-decade tradition of president's plucked from the military.

STREET PRESSURE

"It was a little surprising that the army acknowledged his win," said 40-year-old teacher Adel Mohamed who was in the square when the result was declared after a nail-biting week's wait since the vote. "The pressure from the street, from the revolution, will give Morsy strength to negotiate."

Those in Egypt and beyond who feared a win for Shafik might have spelled the end of the Arab Spring acknowledged a triumph for the popular will, and for the army which accepted it. From Syria's opposition came word that Cairo was again a "source of hope" for a people "facing a repressive war of annihilation".

But millions of Egyptians, and the Western powers, looked on with unease at the prospect of the long-suppressed Brotherhood making good on its dream of an Islamic state for the Arab world's biggest nation.

Israel has been particularly nervous, urging its neighbor to respect their peace deal. It worries that the Brotherhood's win will embolden Palestinian Islamists opposed to Israel.

"Darkness in Egypt," headlined Israeli paper Yedioth Ahronoth. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result.

"Mursi's victory is most likely to strengthen the hand of Hamas in its fight against Israel because it will give it a moral boost," said political scientist Mustapha al-Sayyed, adding this could strain ties with Israel long used to the cool but steady relationship it had with Mubarak.

But the army, determined not to see its $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid a year jeopardized, will likely ensure ties are not undermined even if the relationship sours, diplomats say.

Pledging to uphold international treaties, in a gesture to Israel, Mursi said in his first televised address as president-elect that he would work with others to see the democratic revolution through.

"There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said, a message addressed not just to the army but to the young, urban revolutionaries who launched last year's uprising only to see the Brotherhood dominate the political scene afterwards.

One of the most influential revolutionary youth groups greeted Mursi's win as a victory for last year's uprising.

"We have defeated the candidate of Mubarak's military state, the candidate of the corrupt 'deep state' that we are fed up with," said the April 6 Youth movement.

"Starting today we will work as one body for Egypt."

COMPROMISE

Western powers congratulated Mursi, who received a phone call from U.S. President Barack Obama, offering help.

The White House said in a statement: "The president underscored that the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfill the promise of their revolution."

Mursi may have little choice but to compromise with the army, and Brotherhood sources said a package of agreements discussed with generals last week could soon be announced.

The Brotherhood's political gains, first winning the biggest bloc in parliament and then running for president, had rattled the military. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, the military council, SCAF, dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential vote, then gave itself the legislative power.

Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup."

Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that, though both sides deny any haggling over the result of the presidential vote itself.

"President Mursi and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.

Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Mursi exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.

Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.

Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Mursi swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.

The army wants Mursi sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule" - although the military's influence will go on long beyond that.

Volunteer Selling Skills: Getting Them To To Sell In Your Stores -

volunteers selling gift shopI am a conductor, did you know that? ?I founded a chorus that ultimately was a resident company of the 1100 seat Carpenter Center in Long Beach. It took a lot of volunteers to put on a show from the set designers, ushers, costume designers and the singers themselves.

One of my pet peeves was someone saying to me, ?You have to remember, we?re all volunteers.?

Like that meant there could be no standards or goals; I had to settle.

I didn?t ? if they were out of tune, they had to fix it. If they didn?t practice they were called on it. And if they didn?t understand that performing in a concert hall was a privledge and sold tickets to the show, they were gone.

I love volunteers but it is important to have standards.

I spoke at a couple of hospital gift show conventions over the years and found similiarities between my chorus and their organizations.

Finding a volunteer workforce can be daunting for anyone who runs a non-profit gift shop or store. Training volunteers to sell can be even harder.

Fortunately, the process doesn?t have to be as difficult as you may think.

There are many non-profits and hospital gift stores who operate efficiently with a staff made up almost totally of volunteers. ?If you?re wondering how to get your volunteers to work well for you, to increase their selling skills and boost your business, here are a few key ingredients you can add to the way you interact with your volunteer staff and build your team.

Establish The Vision

Every successful business, non-profit or not, must have a vision. ?It?s the ?why we do what we do each day.? Each volunteer should not only be made aware of the vision, but they should be encouraged to tie in to the vision.

For example, if you operate a hospital gift shop, your vision might be ?anticipating the needs of patients, families, visitors, and staff by providing excellent customer service through merchandise and service.? ?Let your staff know that the vision is your goal. ?When you build a rapport with your staff and establish their trust, they will want to work toward your vision with you.

Value

Volunteers whether they work in the non-profit gift store, the library, museum shop or as docents want to know that they are valued and respected. ?Let yours know on a regular basis that they are vital to you and your store. ?Continually focusing on each volunteer?s positive traits and on those traits all working together to form your team will help them see themselves as an important part of your store.

Standards

While it is often drummed into your ears to ?remember volunteers are not paid staff,? it is important to run your gift store with a clear set of standards for attendance and performance expectations. ?Again, think of singers in a chorus, they have to be in tune, practice their music and attend rehearsals or the entire group suffers.

Volunteers must know what the expectations are as a part of your team. ?Once your volunteers understand the vision and want to work toward the vision with you because of the relationship you have established with them, they should be quick to adhere to your expectations and will probably surpass them on a regular basis. If they don?t, don?t put up with them. You wouldn?t if they were paid; volunteering isn?t a ?get out of jail? card.

Process

Merchandise at a non-profit gift store often is expected to ?just sell itself.? But just like a retail store, when someone shows desire for an item worth more than a few dollars, a volunteer who understands selling can help them justify the purchase. The more merchandise they sell, the better they can give back to the non-profit.

Teach them a simple greeting, ?Good morning, feel free to look around and I?ll be right back.? ?Teach them to connect a feature, the facts of a product with a benefit the customer will get from purchasing it. ?Point out one additional item at the register. Those are three parts from the Five Parts to a Successful Sale that will get them selling.

Rewards

Nothing feels as good as knowing your work is appreciated. This is especially true for those in volunteer positions because they aren?t expecting anything in return. ?You are striving for excellence, and excellent volunteers are valuable to your store. ?Even something as simple as establishing a ?Selling Volunteer Of The Month? will give them pride and a desire to increase their selling skills to achieve even higher goals in the future.

Letting Go

One of the worst things you may ever have to do is to let one of ?your volunteers go. ?Sometimes, when performance expectations are not being met, selling skills are not up to par or other problems occur, volunteers have to be let go. ?This is a part of being a leader.

It is important that your volunteer staff understands that if problems arise that require you to let one of them go, you will. ?Knowing that their position has required expectations that will be upheld will give them a healthy respect for you and will cause them to work harder.

In Summary

Managing volunteers can be a rewarding experience when it is handled the right way. You have the opportunity to work with a group of people who are doing a job not because they need the money, but because they love it. ?Give them a reason to love it even more and increase their selling skills in the process. ?It?s a win-win!

Obama 'encouraged' on Europe; G-20 seeks answers

LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) ? Needing an economic boost, President Barack Obama is trying to land assurances that Europe is closing in on a financial crisis response that will calm the markets and keep the continent's woes from undermining the world. As he presses European leaders to drum up economic demand, they want promises the United States won't plunge off a fiscal cliff by year's end.

Obama, as leader of the giant but struggling U.S. economy, remains central to the Group of 20 summit talks wrapping up Tuesday in this coastal resort region. But it is the European members gathered here, led by Germany and its chancellor, Angela Merkel, who carry both the power and responsibility to stabilize a eurozone reeling from debt, banking and political problems.

Obama sent some upbeat signals Monday amid a sense of global relief that Greece, based on new elections, would not renege on its bailout terms and ditch the euro currency. Obama left a meeting with Merkel feeling "encouraged" about Europe's direction, a spokesman said, as an even more consequential European summit on the crisis approaches in Brussels.

Europe's ability to turn around its fortunes fast will have direct bearing on whether Obama wins a second term. The bigger the drag from abroad, the harder the job growth in the United States.

Obama said all countries must "make sure that we're contributing so that the economy grows, the situation stabilizes, confidence returns to the markets, and most importantly, we're giving our people the chance if they work hard to succeed and do well." After lobbying for Greek voters to stick with budget reforms and the euro, he called their election results a "positive prospect."

Obama was spending much of his Tuesday on the economic crisis after taking care of some unrelated diplomatic business ? his first meeting with Vladimir Putin since the former Russian president returned to the job this year. The leaders met for two hours Monday, in talks dominated by a bloody Syrian conflict that has deeply divided Russia and the U.S.

Obama has set up private talks with one other leader, Chinese President Hu Jintao, on Tuesday before closing off his summitry with a news conference in the late afternoon.

Although the foreign gatherings allow Obama to show off statesmanship, every day spent away from the United States and a direct focus on jobs in America quietly gives headaches to his campaign aides. While Obama was in Mexico, his Republican competitor, Mitt Romney, was campaigning in the American heartland, trying to pull Wisconsin from Obama's column.

Central to the G-20 debate is how nations can boost jobs and consumer demand without sinking deeper into debt. Obama has implored governments to spend and grow, not just cut.

A draft of the leaders' final statement shows they want assurances that the United States won't take a deep plunge and drag them down as well.

The statement says the U.S. will "calibrate" its attempt to rein in debt and spending "by avoiding a sharp fiscal contraction in 2013."

That's a reference to a big threat to economic growth in the United States after the November election: the expiration of George W. Bush-era tax cuts and a scheduled round of automatic spending cuts that could send the nation back into a recession.

While the White House and lawmakers agree that they must act late this year or early next year to avoid such a "fiscal cliff," there is no path yet on how to avoid it.

Wall Street showed no giddiness after pro-Europe parties prevailed in Sunday's Greek election. U.S. stocks were little changed and investors seemed fed up with Europe's crisis.

Obama's political move has to been constantly show confidence in Europe's ability to solve its problems, but prod its leaders to move and chide them for not doing more sooner.

Now, White House aides talk more positively about the direction of the debate, as they see it, toward the role of government in spurring economic growth.

"I think if you look at the shift in the focus, you'll see a very strong focus on supporting demand, ... recognizing that economic conditions have deteriorated," said Lael Brainard, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for international affairs.

"This is very important to the Europeans in particular," she said. "And yes, we have heard it from German colleagues."

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Congress unlikely to move on Obama immigration change

While many Republicans denounced President Obama surprise Friday move on younger illegal immigrants, there was no sense in Washington, D.C. in recent days that Congress would seriously try to overturn that change anytime soon.

If you only paid attention to the Twitter account and web pages of Speaker John Boehner, you wouldn't even know there had been a decision by the feds to "not" enforce deportation laws against younger illegals who were brought here by the parents before age 16.

Out on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney was like Speaker Boehner in that both men kept their focus on economic matters, with Romney not even mentioning the immigration story in his stump speech.

Asked by reporters about the Obama move during a stop in New Hampshire, Romney clearly wasn't itching for a showdown.

"Young people that come here for no fault of their own is an important matter to be considered and should be solved on a long-term basis so they know what their future would be in this country," Romney told reporters.

"I think the action that the president took today makes it more difficult to reach that long-term solution because an executive order is, of course, just a short-term matter ? it can be reversed by subsequent presidents."

Just last week the House approved a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, which included a provision that prohibited the feds from doing anything to "circumvent or fail to enforce immigration laws."

"And yet, this is what the president is choosing to do," said Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), who labeled the Obama decision, "entirely unacceptable."

"This administration has yet again demonstrated that it will rule by executive fiat instead of working with Congress," Price said in a statement.

But as House members return to work today, there didn't seem to be any real way forward in the Congress for opponents of the change, which amounts to the feds deciding not to enforce certain immigration laws - though GOP lawmakers will hold an afternoon news conference.

That was obvious from the tweets of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who spent more time plugging his new book and his appearance on the CBS program "Face the Nation" than raising questions about the President's move, which actually tracked some of what Rubio wanted to achieve.

In the end, this may be more of a story that only lasts for a couple of days, with economic issues casting a much larger shadow over Election 2012.

The Reporter vs President Obama

As for the Daily Caller reporter, Neil Munro, who tangled with President Obama in the Rose Garden on Friday over immigration, the White House Correspondent's Association is taking a dim view of Munro's verbal exchange with the President.

While Munro claimed afterwards that he asked a question because he thought the President had finished his remarks, that explanation was met with some skepticism in journalistic and political circles in Washington.

A number of people sent me emails and Twitter messages saying that reporters were showing a double standard by criticizing Munro, but ignoring past transgressions against Republican Presidents - with the yelling of former ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson getting the most attention.

But my recollection of Donaldson's work - and observations by Sam himself over the weekend - is that Donaldson yelled a lot at Presidents only 'after' they were finished speaking, and did not interrupt a statement as seemed to happen on Friday.

This case reminds me a lot of the aftermath of the "You lie!" incident involving Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), when he shouted at President Obama (also over immigration) during a speech to a Joint Session of Congress.

For some listeners, Wilson and Munro were both calling out the President, making any criticism moot of how they made their case verbally.

I have covered a number of events at the White House since the Reagan Administration, and I can't remember any one ever interrupting a President - it would be very bad form to do so.

Let's just say that Mr. Munro might not have the easiest of times getting approved for a day pass to the White House in the future.

AVADirect and Eurocom laptops hop on the GeForce GTX 680M bandwagon

AVADirect and Eurocom laptops hop on the GeForce GTX 680M bandwagon

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680M has made an impact in Alienware and Origin PC laptops so far. Some of us like our mobile gaming a little more barebones, however, and both AVADirect as well as Eurocom are taking their turn at carrying the graphics powerhouse in portables using heavily customizable, Clevo-made designs. AVADirect's 15.6-inch P150EM and 17.3-inch P170EM, as well as their matching Eurocom Racer 2.0 and Neptune 2.0 brethren, can take advantage of all 1,344 processing cores and that abundant 4GB of RAM. Do brace for a hit to the pocketbook for the sake of that increase in frame rate: although Eurocom is staying quiet early on, AVADirect is charging a $536 upgrade price on top of any given configuration.

Fun.'s Movie Awards Set Has Jen Aniston, Channing Tatum Singing Along

When Fun. performed their breakout hit, We Are Young,' at the movie awards, the stars couldn't help but sing along
By Gil Kaufman

We say it all the time around here, "stars, they're just like us." But if you found yourself nodding your head and singing along to Fun.'s irresistible breakout hit, "We Are Young," during the band's performance
at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, well, then you're just like the stars.

Posted up in a tiny, crimson-lit cube and dressed in sharp white tuxedoes, the boys put as much emotion as possible into the tune (with an assist from Janelle Monáe) and the effect was infectious. Just like you were likely singing along at home, when the camera panned onto the star-studded audience it caught glimpses of Channing Tatum and wife Jenna Dewan bobbing their heads, Jennifer Aniston smiling and digging the tune and even "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart grooving in her seat.

As the crowd rhythmically clapped and sang along, rapper-turned-remodeler Vanilla Ice wasn't immune, with a big smile plastered on his face as his head nodded along. Nor was "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson, who was singing, clapping and shaking her bum to the song's towering chorus. Aniston was flanked by "Hunger Games"' Elizabeth Banks, who also wasn't shy about her enthusiasm for the song of the summer.

One of the biggest smiles was plastered on the face of "Bridesmaids" and "Office" actress Ellie Kemper, who couldn't hide her joyful ear-to-ear grin. Given the slow climb to near-ubiquity that mirrors other across-the-board smashes like "Hey Ya!" and "Crazy," it's no surprise that the audience was digging the song so hard.

See? We told you, the stars are just like us!

Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. See what went down at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards!

(AP) ? Just weeks after taking a stake in Chesapeake Energy Corp., activist shareholder Carl Icahn has helped orchestrate a shake-up at the nation's No. 2 natural gas producer.

Chesapeake said Monday it plans to replace four of its existing board members in the next few weeks. The board has been under fire for recent corporate governance controversies and the company's stock has plunged as natural gas prices hit 10-year lows.

Chesapeake said the decision follows extensive talks with Icahn and the company's biggest shareholder, Southeastern Asset Management.

Icahn recently acquired a 7.6 percent stake in Chesapeake. In a scathing letter to Chesapeake's board made public late last month, Icahn wrote that the board had failed its basic function of overseeing management in "dramatic fashion." It's been disclosed over the past few weeks that Chief Executive Aubrey McClendon was allowed to borrow money from a company that Chesapeake was doing business with and run a hedge fund that bet on oil and gas prices. The borrowings were related to a program that entitled McClendon to buy personal stakes in company wells.

Icahn also recounts in the letter that he asked that shareholders be given representation on the board, but was rebuffed the next day.

Now, a little more than a week after refusing, Chesapeake has relented.

Icahn or a person he chooses will take one seat on the board. Southeastern Asset Management, which holds a 13.6 percent stake, will select three board members. A fifth board member is retiring.

Michael Hall, a senior analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co., said the move "will go a long way in addressing the market's lack of confidence around Chesapeake's corporate governance and likely usher in a new culture of increased conservatism."

Icahn's Chesapeake stock purchase was disclosed in a regulatory filing last month. He spent about $785 million for 50.1 million shares. Icahn is known for investing in companies and aggressively calling for change.

Chesapeake, along with other natural gas companies, has been hit hard by falling natural gas prices. The Oklahoma City company's shares have lost 30 percent so far this year. They rose 1.7 percent to $15.85 in morning trading on Monday.

Chesapeake has the added burden of a huge debt load, which Icahn pins on the board. Chesapeake's plan is to sell oil and gas leases and other assets to raise money to pay down debt. Biju Perincheril, an analyst at Jeffries & Company, estimates the company needs to sell at least $7 billion worth of assets before the end of the year or risk violating the terms of some of its loans.

Chesapeake is seeking a new board chairman after agreeing last month to strip McClendon of that title. The company has agreed that the selection must be approved by Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management.

"We are pleased that Chesapeake is being responsive to issues raised by us and many of the company's other shareholders," said Southeastern Asset Chairman and CEO O. Mason Hawkins in a statement.

McClendon will remain as CEO and a board member. The selection of a new chairman will be made by June 22.

"I am fully supportive of these measures and remain focused on executing Chesapeake's strategy," McClendon said in a statement.

Chesapeake's board will continue to have nine members.
