Chef Alfred Portale on 28 Years of Gotham Bar and Grill - Eater ...

If you've walked by Gotham Bar and Grill, chances are you've noticed a series of New York Times reviews from over the years hanging in the window. They're all three-spots. Despite the fact that he's considered a pioneer of modern American cooking, the man largely responsible for those accolades, chef Alfred Portale, doesn't really attribute those successes to virtuosity or creativity. Instead, he points to the importance of consistency and understanding the stakes involved when operating a large New York City restaurant as the most vital factors. In the following interview, Portale analyzes Gotham over the years, his personality as a chef and businessman, the evolution of restaurant culture and criticism, and his plans for the future.

Who do you think your audience is at Gotham?
I don't really know, actually. I don't know who these people are. I know we get a lot of young people. This year it was a great looking, energetic crowd, I can tell you that.

Is there a type of diner you wish was more interested in the restaurant?
Yes, definitely. Over the years, our demand for late night reservations has waned somewhat. There's probably a number of reasons for that. For one, I think we're perceived as being more expensive than we once were. I've always priced and designed the menu so that we would provide a lot of value. 25 years ago, we had entrees that were between $25 and $35, and now we have entrees that are $30 to $48. Our prices and check averages have gone up, but our food costs have remained the same. For whatever reason, though, we don't get the late night crowd that we used to. We're not doing less covers, though.

The question of price actually came up in the last Sam Sifton review, which praised the restaurant but pointed to the fact that it's expensive.
It isn't an inexpensive restaurant, but we put a lot on the plate and deliver a lot of value. It's also very labor intensive. Because we've been around a while, maybe we're perceived as being expensive and special occasion. We're not seen as the hip place with the late night bar scene, although on the weekends and the fourth quarter of the year it gets close to that.

Speaking of the reviews: you look at that panel outside with however many three-star reviews from the Times, and it suggests this almost ridiculous stability. Have there been dips or periods of crisis for the restaurant?
I think what I'll say is that it has always been a lot of work. I can honestly say that in all of our years, I truly believe that the restaurant has gotten better in one area or another, whether it's the wine, the service, or the food, or something else. It has gotten better every single year. I can't point to any single year and say it was a down period. You can look at other restaurants that have been around for a while and see periods where they dip and then refocus. That has never happened to us.

Why do you think you've been able to achieve that without getting bored or letting other challenges that naturally come up in life get in the way?
It's a lot to do with my personality, I think. I think that what Gotham represents ? it's a big, busy restaurant that does many millions of dollars in sales in a crazy restaurant city ? is not something to be trifled with. As with any business, you want to keep your eye on it. I focus on it every day and I love cooking and I love what I do. I love Gotham too much to not care every day.

I don't take things for granted. I don't believe so much in luck. There are a couple of ways to succeed: you can either be more creative, smarter, brilliant, more artistic than anyone else, or you can simply have some of those things and work harder than everybody.

You'd put yourself in the latter category, it seems.
That's kind of the working thesis for me. This business is just so fleeting. It's always frightened me that for us to be successful on any given day, I have to rely on so many people: my purchaser, my purveyors, my prep guys. If they screw up, I'm fucked. If the reservationists make a mistake or aren't aggressive or aren't confirming tables, we'll have a shitty night with a lot of no-shows. To rely on so many people is a little frightening, so it drives me to really stay focused. I can't just chill and lay back, ever.

Shifting gears, what would you say is New American cuisine?
It depends on whom you ask.

Do you like the term?
Not really. I don't totally dislike it, but as you just brought up, what does it mean? I prefer to say that what we are doing here is modern American. What I've always done is draw from history and in some cases, modernize.

One of the reasons that we became successful and stayed successful was figuring out ? and this is definitely not unique now ? that you could have first-class food, informed service, a super wine list, and a nice environment with absolutely no pretension. In the early days of Gotham, the only great restaurants were the three and four star French restaurants where the captains were formal and you were treated like shit. I didn't want that.

Now, of course, Danny [Meyer] really popularized that concept, but we were doing it before. Eight months before, to be exact [laughs]. He used to live upstairs and used to hang out while they were building Union Square. He's a good friend and a good neighbor.

As a young chef, what made you consider taking that rather bold direction?
It mainly came from my experiences in France.

You worked at Guerard, right?
Guerard and Troisgros. Troisgros is like a family-owned restaurant, a hotel, and it was intense but also very jovial and friendly. We were welcomed to eat in the restaurant, for instance. Then I went to Guerard and got there a day before starting to work so that I could have dinner there. They told me I could not eat in the dining room. We had to come in through the workers' quarters and couldn't spend time in the guest areas. The food was amazing and I loved everything I learned there, but why did it have to be that way? Why does it have to be super formal? It's like that review of Le Cirque by Ruth Reichl, where she went to the restaurant, they didn't know who she was, and then treated her like shit. Then she went back, they knew who she was, and Sirio [Maccioni] was like, "The Queen of Spain is sitting at the bar, but your table is ready!"

It was a new idea back then to have a restaurant that defied that. When we got the first three-star review, everybody was super pissed. "Their waiters are wearing sneakers! How can they?"

And now it's normal for a place like that to be eligible for a great review.
Sometimes I disagree with some of the reviews in general these days, because it used to be that everything kind of weighed in in its relative importance ? the quality of the space, the glassware, the flowers, the menu, the service. It wasn't just about one thing. Now you can see restaurant reviews where it can be that the food is wonderful but everything else is lacking. That's not the fault of the chefs, but of the critics.

I don't want to pick any recent examples, but a good old example is Sushi Hatsu. I was there 100 times, because I lived around the corner. If you sat in front of the old man on the right side of the sushi bar, it was some of the best fish in the world. If you were anywhere else in the restaurant, it was not the same experience. I had eaten there 50 times, and every time, they'd pretend like they hadn't seen me before. They would give you different quality soy sauce and different chopsticks if you were sitting at a table and not the sushi bar. The chairs were banged up. It was a place I don't think I'd recommend to anyone, but the New York Times went in there and gave it three stars. That pissed me off.

Here's a rather pretentious question: the only other place you've opened is a steakhouse, and you've been here for nearly 30 years. Would you say your identity is fully linked to Gotham, or would you do something different if this place was taken away from you?
One might say that of course, because I've been here for 30 years and haven't opened anything aside from the steakhouse in Miami, that is the case. But I don't necessarily feel that way. If I closed Gotham tomorrow, I would roll out a different concept and do different cuisine. I would love to do that.

You have a style that you can't deviate too much from?
Yeah, exactly. I miss doing other concepts, because we have Gotham food. We will sometimes come up with dishes and nix them because they aren't Gotham.

Do you have plans to open new concepts, then?
Yes.

Can you talk about them?
No, not really [laughs].

What about the future of Gotham?
It is a constant challenge to keep the restaurant fresh and exciting. Not only do you have to do it internally, but you also have to think about promoting and marketing.

Does it ever become a burden or make you feel like you run the risk of doing something out of character to keep things fresh and relevant?
No, that never occurs to me. I'm really doing what I love to do, the way I want to do it. I don't feel like we need to do anything out of character to stay relevant. I remember getting this fancy jacket 15 years ago when we got a three-star review. It was cool at the time, and I can still wear it. There's one fundamental thing that's made us successful: delivering astonishing consistency.

Scientists identify new gene that influences survival in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A team of scientists, including faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), have discovered a gene that influences survival time in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). The study, published August 26 in Nature Medicine, describes how the loss of activity of a receptor called EphA4 substantially extends the lifespan of people with the disease. When coupled with a UMMS study published last month in Nature identifying a new ALS gene (profilin-1) that also works in conjunction with EphA4, these findings point to a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity.

"Taken together, these findings are particularly exciting because they suggest that suppression of EphA4 may be a new way to treat ALS," said Robert Brown, MD, DPhil, a co-author on the study and chair of neurology at UMass Medical School.

ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting the motor neurons in the central nervous system. As motor neurons die, the brain's ability to send signals to the body's muscles is compromised. This leads to loss of voluntary muscle movement, paralysis and eventually respiratory failure. The cause of most cases of ALS is not known. Approximately 10 percent of cases are inherited. Though investigators at UMMS and elsewhere have identified several genes shown to cause inherited or familial ALS, almost 50 percent of these cases have an unknown genetic cause. There are no significant treatments for the disease.

Wim Robberecht, MD, PhD, lead investigator of the Nature Medicine study and a researcher at the University of Leuven in Belgium and the Vesalius Research Center, screened for genes in zebrafish that blunt the adverse effect of the ALS mutant gene SOD1. Through this process, his team identified EphA4 as an ALS modifier. Dr. Robberecht's team went on to show that when this gene is inactivated in mice with ALS, the mice live longer.

Dr. Robberecht then turned to UMass Medical School to confirm that turning off EphA4 in human ALS cells would slow the progression of the disease. Dr. Brown and his team identified two human ALS cases with mutations in the EphA4 gene which, like the zebrafish and the mice, had unusually long survival times. This suggests that blocking EphA4 in patients with ALS may be a potential therapeutic target in the future.

In an exciting, related development, a new ALS gene (profilin-1) identified last month by UMMS scientists works in conjunction with EphA4 in neurons to control outgrowth of motor nerve terminals. In effect, gene variants at both the top and the bottom of the same signaling pathway are shown to effect ALS progression. Together these discoveries highlight a new molecular pathway in neurons that is directly related to ALS susceptibility and severity and suggests that other components of the pathway may be implicated in ALS.

"It is exciting that these two studies identify the same pathway in ALS," said John Landers, PhD, associate professor of neurology and lead author of the PFN1 study. "Hopefully this discovery will accelerate efforts to finding a treatment for ALS."

Perenco gets Peru OK for oil work despite concern about tribes

LIMA (Reuters) - Perenco said on Thursday it will start producing oil next year in block 67 of Peru's jungle after the government approved its environmental study for the project, which activists say will endanger isolated tribes.

President Ollanta Humala has reinforced policies that seek to turn Peru into a net oil exporter and expand its natural gas sector, upsetting indigenous rights groups.

"The Block 67 project is of national importance. It will shift the balance of Peru's hydrocarbon landscape with production of 60,000 barrels per day in six years time," an official of the Anglo-French firm said in a statement.

Peru's energy ministry signed off on the company's environmental impact assessment on August 3, a year and a half after the company submitted it.

Indigenous rights advocates say the study refuses to acknowledge the presence of tribes who choose to live in isolation in the jungle and who lack immunity to common viruses that can be fatal for entire communities.

"We've collected the testimony of locals, loggers, and even military officers, who gave information about the presence of isolated peoples in the area" said Israel Aquise, an anthropologist with AIDESEP, an indigenous rights group.

"But the government and the company haven't taken that into consideration," he said.

For its part, Perenco said: "corporate social responsibility is an integral part of the project. We are working very closely with the communities living near the block."

A law passed in 2006 says so-called uncontacted tribes have the right to remain in voluntary isolation without outside disturbance, but makes an exception for extractive activities of "public necessity for the state."

The 630-square-mile (1,020-square-kilometer) block of more than 300 million barrels has been declared of national interest to Peru by legal decree.

"This project will transform Peru into a net exporter of oil, as well as provide better options for the domestic market," the 2009 statute passed during the administration of former President Alan Garcia says.

Perenco says it is complying with all of Peru's laws and regulations and, in its impact study, said the state hasn't officially recognized isolated tribes in the area. At the same time, Perenco drew up a contingency plan in case encounters with uncontacted peoples are made.

Peru's Indian affairs agency INDEPA has declared five protected reserves for isolated tribes so far, but the area in block 67 is not currently one of them, Aquise said.

He said at least two isolated tribes live between the Napo and Tigre rivers where Perenco will operate.

"If there is contact with a company employee, the most likely outcome is they get sick and disappear as a people," Aquise said. "Another possibility is they move into another tribe's territory and it ends in violent conflict."

Perenco said Petrovietnam Exploration and Production Corporation (PVEP) has signed an agreement to acquire a 50 percent indirect interest in block 67, but that Perenco will still operate the project, which will ship the oil by river and then pipe it some thousand kilometers (620 miles) to Peru's Pacific coast.

Last year, Perenco got permission to build a 270-km (128.6-mile) pipeline as part of the project, 30.2 km (18.8 miles) of which extend into the Pucacuro environmental reserve.

In Peru, the energy and mining ministry - not the recently created environment ministry - approves environmental impact studies.

Many of the world's remaining uncontacted tribes live in the Amazon jungle that stretches across numerous South American countries.

"Tribes like these were wiped off the map in North America 150 years ago, but we have different standards of human rights than existed back then," said Scott Wallace, author of the book 'The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon's Last Uncontacted Tribes.'"

Day 231 | To go offline or not | Anna Dahlstr?m

Posted on August 20, 2012 by Anna

There is a lot of talk and opinions around going offline when you?re on holiday. Some say you have to. Some say they need to and some say they don?t want to. What ever stand you?re in there seems to be an opinion about it.

I haven?t gone completely offline when I?ve been away this week but I have spent a lot less time online. I?ve answered a few emails, read some tweets, liked and uploaded a few pictures on instagram. During my holiday I?ve generally just enjoyed myself, in what ever form or shape that has taken and for me that does involve going online once in a while.

A holiday is a break from everyday life and a chance to do what you enjoy. Though I?m definitely an advocate of having proper time off where we don?t work I do believe that holidays can take many forms and shapes. Cleaning out the closet so to speak can be an excellent way of getting rid of things that lie in the back of your mind and depending on who you are it might be just what you need in order to completely enjoy your time off. I?ve had a week now and compared to friends and family back home that is a very short holiday but for me it?s enough. More than anything I?m looking forward to getting stuck in to byflock and our products and though I?m only going to work two days next week, having the freedom to be where I want and do what I want is enough to provide me with a sense of still being on holiday. And that I believe, is the key to a good holiday ? deminising the number of have tos and musts and replacing them with what ever it is that makes you happy and feel relaxed. If that means spending a bit of time online there?s no harm in that as long as it?s not impacting negatively on the time you?ve set aside with friends and family.

Security, screen size and form filling still barriers for m-commerce ...

There was also a propensity for participants to perform short transactions on their smartphones, favouring sites where they had already signed up so their card details were stored or a digital wallet was available.

The study found that users worry about filling in forms and don?t like performing lengthy processes on their mobiles. Only rarely would they happily enter their details on their phones for the first time whilst out and about.

A typical quote from one of the respondents was:??I browse for things on the phone and do?my research, but then when I am going to buy it I?do it at home?.

Barriers to m-commerce adoption

The study identified four reoccurring issues that put respondents off making purchases on their smartphones -?security, safety, screen size and connectivity.

Most of the participants were worried about?security issues?such as having their phones hacked, or infected with viruses that could lead to their personal details being intercepted or stolen.?

These concerns were particularly noticeable among Android and Blackberry users.

At home or at work consumers have become familiar with the software and technology in place to protect them and their technology, but with smartphones users still feel more exposed and lack this sort of recognisable protection.

There were similar concerns about?safety?when entering card details on the phone in public where other people can see.?This is the main reason why respondents favoured apps and mobile sites where their details were already stored.

One respondent said:??I was going to buy a laptop. I did browse on the phone, but I didn?t buy it there. I only reserved it. I would be worried about paying that sort of money entering my card details on the phone, so I paid it at the store?.

The third issue was with the?screen size, as it makes it difficult to appreciate the look and feel of products.

Unless it is a product that consumers are already familiar with, or a product for which the looks are not a factor to consider, users are a bit reluctant to complete the purchase from their phones.

And finally, the problem of poor 3G access and?slow connectivity?meant that respondents were worried about being cut off in the middle of a transaction.

?For some, it wasn?t worth trying to embark on a lengthy purchase process very likely to be interrupted at some point because of loss of reception or poor connectivity.?

Conclusion

The concerns raised by the study are challenges that retailers have been trying to overcome for several years.?The size of the screen is something that can never really be overcome and has in part contributed to?the success of tablets in driving conversions.

Consumers clearly like the convenience of a mobile device, but still want to see large, hi-res images before making a purchase decision.

Consumer concerns over security and safety can be solved though. As the report suggests, by storing the customers data or offering alternative payment methods such as PayPal you can bypass the need for form filling and entering card details.

This has been shown proven to work for the likes of Amazon and?eBay, which aims to process $10bn in mobile sales this year.

Other simple methods, such as offering prominent reassurances that the checkout process is secure can help to allay customer concerns and reduce the chance of basket abandonment.

Get Noticed In Cyber Space With SEO | Internet Marketing & Online ...

The bigger the Internet gets, the smaller your business might look in the overall scheme of things. By following the steps in this article, you can stay ahead of the competition. Having great content is useless if no one is going to see it. The following are some tips for generating greater awareness of your site.

Once you know the keywords that are going into your text, be sure that some land in your titles too. Find clever ways to incorporate keywords in your titles, so that you engage both the search engines and the readers. Your website will match up with users? search terms better, and your traffic will soon increase.

Consider acquiring a domain name that has not been renewed by its original owner. This may give you an advantage with SEO by building off of their prior ranking. Search engines place a higher value on domain names that have been around for more than two years. Consider searching for domain names that have been recently dropped as possibilities for your site.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You must focus on the content of your website.

When working on improving search engine optimization, it is crucial to take advantage of social media sites. Sites like Facebook and Twitter give you a direct line to your customers and YouTube videos allow you to reach customers who want visuals.

Promote yourself as being an expert in your niche. It?s a very powerful marketing technique. Design your website around a certain niche, and use SEO techniques to drive those potential customers to your site so they can buy your products and services. It?s essential that, through it all, you are giving your clientele exactly what they want, instead of your best guess on their desires.

When a website offers information in addition to its sales, it generally ranks higher. It can be invaluable to add positive customer reviews and a purchase guide of your products to your website.

When choosing the best keywords to appeal to the search engines, do your best to think as a customer would rather than as an inside expert. Zero in on the phrases that potential customers are actually going to punch into the search engine.

When selecting a domain name, choose one that is easily remembered and has a name that has something to do with what you are selling. A memorable name is important, especially for people who find your content through social media sites.

If you have images, you should always include a tag that describes your image. These tags show what an image should be if it doesn?t load, or the visitor has disabled image display in his or her browser. The takeaway message from this paragraph is that Google looks for keywords in alt tags, just like any other text content on your page.

Assist the web spiders in their mission if you expect to be ranked highly. Web spiders will find your content based on keywords, but your site should be easy for them to use. If you make a site map, you can tell the spider what is important on your website.

You site should be easy to navigate and to read. Include features on your site such as larger font size options and always make sure your site is clear and concise. This will help it rank higher in search results. Optimize your site for both readers and search engines.

Putting your website in a prime place to be found is what search engine optimization is all about. The article you have just read gave you multiple tips on how to make this happen for you. Applying these simple tricks will get your website noticed in no time, so increase your traffic today!

Invasive Fungi Wreak Havoc on Species Worldwide [Slide Show]

Human activity like trade has helped launch a deadly wave of fungal disease

In 2008 Matthew Allender, a wildlife veterinarian affiliated with the University of Illinois at Urbana?Champaign, noticed something wrong with some of the rattlesnakes he'd been studying as part of a population-monitoring program near Carlyle, Ill. His team had found three eastern massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus) with severe facial swelling and disfiguration. Allender brought them back to his lab for observation. The lesions ulcerated and progressed beneath the skin. When the snakes died just three weeks later the disease had deformed their mouths, nasal passages and fangs beyond recognition.

Allender described a fungus, Chrysosporium, as the culprit. In 2010 Allender's team found another infected snake, and since then two more. Allender doesn't yet understand how the disease is transmitted?or how to stop it.

"I've never seen anything like this in wild snakes before," Allender says. "Nor has anyone else. In almost all organisms, fungi are opportunistic pathogens that attack compromised immune systems. These were otherwise healthy snakes," however, he says. Already suffering from diminishing numbers, the snake is a candidate for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's threatened species list.

Unfortunately, the rattlesnakes are only the latest example of species falling prey to fungal attack in a troubling global trend noted by public health officials, zoologists and conservationists. Fungi have afflicted species as varied as amphibians, bats, arabica coffee, mangrove crabs, wheat, coral, bees, oak trees, sea turtles and even humans. (For instance, infectious meningitis is caused by a fungus.)

The most well-documented example is the lethal amphibian fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, commonly known as chytrid. Originally reported in 1997, chytridiomycosis has infected more than 500 species of frogs and salamanders on all continents where amphibians are found, and launched half of all amphibian species into evolutionary decline. Many other species affected by fungal disease face imminent extinction, such as the European crayfish.

View a slide show of invasive fungi's trail of death and disease.

To establish whether the data scientists were gathering really did point to a dramatic shift in a deadly trend affecting numerous species, Matthew Fisher, a reader in fungal disease epidemiology at Imperial College London, and his colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of past studies available on Web of Science, an online citation index provided by Thomson Reuters, ProMED (the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases) and HealthMap, which monitors disease outbreaks in plant and animal hosts. Their findings revealed that fungi and funguslike pathogens (oomycetes) account for 65 percent of the pathogen-driven species loss in the past half century.

Perhaps it is unsurprising in a global economy, but human activity such as international trade and military operations have intensified the dispersal of fungal pathogens, delivering new foes to unprotected victims and introducing new evolutionary opportunities to previously harmless fungus species.

Long thought to reproduce asexually through mitosis, where each offspring is the identical clone of its parent, scientists have discovered fungi can also reproduce sexually, via meiosis. By nimbly changing their reproductive strategy in response to new environmental conditions, fungi transfer genetic advantages from both parents?just like humans do?giving their offspring a better shot at survival. They also readily hybridize (interbreed between different species), outcross (selectively breed with individuals of different strains within a species) and recombine (exchange genetic material during cell division).

Green Homes for Sale: Real Estate Broker Marketing - The - blog*spot

Summertime is great for casting aside workplace hibernation and getting out there to meet and greet. Something about the warm temperatures and shining sun just get you in the mood to get out there. There's another, more intimidating, name for this social activity: networking. So, what are the keys to effective networking for real estate brokers?Make a Great First ImpressionYou have an opportunity to network each and every time someone crosses your path. Remember: networking is NOT selling. You are not trying to figure out this this person will buy something from you, just seeing if you have any rapport. Is this someone you'd like to get to know better?Don't forget: the same question will be running through their head, too!A smile, handshake, and eye contact are a great way to get off on the right foot.

After the first impression comes the second, probably when you answer that ubiquitous question:"What do you do?"This is a major fork in the road when networking.Possibility one: you keep conversing; perhaps a relationship develops. Then financial transactions can ensure (a polite way of saying "cha-ching!").Possibility two: well, let me illustrate this point with a story. When I was moving into my office building, I bumped into a new neighbor. We hadn't even finished shaking hands when I asked, "whaddaya do?" What ask was I supposed to ask? We were, after all, in an office building.I must have surprised the poor guy. He barely managed to stammer: "oh... um, actually, I, you know, do lots of things... real estate broker... mostly rental properties, and, well, uh... " In the uncomfortable silence that ensued, I assumed he was done. What kind of answer, though, is "I do a lot of things"? Don't we all? What if he had said: "I help families who would like to live in a house with a back yard, but aren't ready to purchase yet." This answer would have told me what problem he solves for whom.My answer would have been: "Oh, really? My friend Susan and her husband were just telling me the other day that they wanted to move into a house so their kids have room play outside."And the conservation could have continued. So, for the next week, concentrate on making a strong first impression. And for that second impression, answer the question "what do you do?" confidently and precisely. Say for whom you are the best real estate broker and what problem you solve for your clients.

Broadening researcher access to protein simulation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2012) ? Using just an upgraded desktop computer equipped with a relatively inexpensive graphics processing card, a team of computer scientists and biochemists at the University of California, San Diego, has developed advanced GPU accelerated software and demonstrated for the first time that this approach can sample biological events that occur on the millisecond timescale.

These results have the potential to bring millisecond scale sampling, now available only on a multi-million dollar supercomputer, to all researchers, and could significantly impact the study of protein dynamics with key implications for improved drug and biocatalyst development.

With some innovative coding, a GPU (graphics processing unit) that retails for about $500, and the widely used software package of molecular simulations called Amber (Assisted Model Building with Energy Refinement), the researchers were able to run a simulation showing the same five long-lived structural states of a specific protein as observed in a simulation conducted by D.E. Shaw Research's Anton, a purpose-built molecular dynamics (MD) supercomputer. The Anton simulation was conducted over a period of slightly more than one millisecond -- or 100 times longer than the previous record.

"This work shows that using conventional, off-the-shelf GPU hardware combined with an enhanced sampling algorithm, events taking place on the millisecond time scale can be effectively sampled with dynamics simulations orders of magnitude shorter (2000X) than those timescales," the researchers wrote in their paper, 'Routine Access to Millisecond Timescale Events with Accelerated Molecular Dynamics.' The paper was published July 27 in the Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation.

The enhanced sampling algorithm refers to the use of accelerated molecular dynamics, or aMD, a method that improves the conformational space sampling of proteins when compared with conventional molecular dynamics simulations, or cMD.

Specifically, the UC San Diego researchers analyzed the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI), a small protein with 58 residues. BPTI was the first protein to be simulated, in 1977, with J. Andrew McCammon, the Joseph E. Mayer Chair of Theoretical Chemistry at the UC San Diego, as lead author on that milestone research.

"The breakthrough described in the new paper was achieved by combining advances in theory and in computer technology, but other types of resources such as SDSC's new Gordon supercomputer are also increasingly needed for large, data-intensive simulations," said McCammon, part of the research team on the latest findings. McCammon is also a chemistry and biochemistry professor in UC San Diego's Division of Physical Sciences, a Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at UC San Diego, Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and a Fellow with the university's San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).

While the team's aMD simulation was only 500 nanoseconds long, or .0005 of a millisecond, the group was able to sample all of the structural states seen in the longer timescale simulation run on Anton.

"In just 500 nanoseconds, we saw the same things as in the Anton simulations, which we used as an excellent benchmark," said Romelia Salomon-Ferrer, an SDSC postdoctoral research fellow and member of the team who ported aMD to Amber. "We were able to cover that same space faster. One could compare that to having a choice between taking a train or a plane to San Francisco. The distance is the still the same; however the plane would get there faster. But this would also be a very particular plane in the sense that it is also relatively inexpensive."

In addition to potentially broadening access among researchers by enabling desktop simulations, the UC San Diego research also marks the longest aMD simulation of a biomolecule to-date, as well as the first "apples-to-apples" comparison of an aMD simulation versus a very long cMD simulation.

"The key to this work has been to sit down and rethink the problem from the beginning," said Ross Walker, an assistant research professor with the SDSC, principal investigator (PI) and corresponding author of this research. "We had already massively accelerated conventional MD on GPUs but even this was not going to be sufficient to allow us to routinely sample conformational events taking place on the millisecond timescale. By combining our experience with conventional MD on GPUs with the enhanced sampling provided by accelerated MD methods, we were able to exploit both providing, for the first time, the ability to routinely simulate events that take place on the millisecond timescale."

"Furthermore, GPUs offer the potential for supercomputing performance on the average desktop computer, giving researchers the ability to test multiple hypotheses in real time," said Walker, who also is an adjunct assistant professor in UC San Diego's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and an NVIDIA CUDA Fellow. "The NSF-funded work we are doing in the Walker Molecular Dynamics Lab at SDSC to develop GPU accelerated software promises to transform how scientists approach applying molecular dynamics techniques that may ultimately lead to the design of new drugs and biological catalysts."

"Running the entire MD simulation on the GPU as opposed to other approaches has really allowed us to run them much more efficiently, both in terms of conventional MD and now accelerated MD," said Levi C.T. Pierce, lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral research fellow with SDSC and the university's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. "The conventional MD in Amber was completely rewritten to run on the GPU, while the enhanced sampling method, aMD, has been coded into the GPU, allowing us to access these long time scale dynamics."

The researchers, however, cautioned that while aMD is very useful for the exploration of conformational space -- the different structures explored as the protein fluctuates -- it does not reproduce the exact timescale of these fluctuations.

"Accelerated molecular dynamics may not solve the entire problem, but it is a really good initial tool," said Salomon-Ferrer. "By using aMD along with Amber, we can lower the financial and logistical barriers to research, and one particularly important characteristic of aMD is that researchers don't really need to know anything about the complexities of a specific protein beforehand."

Also participating in the research was Cesar Augusto F. de Oliveira, with the UC San Diego Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Researchers used GPU desktops in Walker's lab as well as a GPU compute cluster at SDSC and the resources of the Keeneland computing facility at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The work was funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through its Scientific Software Innovations Institutes program -- NSF SI2-SSE (NSF1047875 & NSF1148276) grants, the NSF's Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) program, and by a University of California grant (UC Lab 09-LR-06-117792).

Alaska Communications Brings The Greatest State Together

When you?re born and raised in a place you get to know its charms, idiosyncrasies and most importantly, the people. For Alaskans, that means covering a lot of ground ? they live in America?s largest state. But no matter where they are, Alaska Communications keeps Alaskans connected. That?s what spurred the creation of ?Great Alaska?, the newest spot from VITRO and Alaska Communications, with the help of tilt-shift phenom Sam O?Hare.

Shot across Alaska in Anchorage, Girdwood, Juneau, Kenai and Homer, this new spot shares the company?s mission ? to keep the great state of Alaska connected, in effect making it smaller for families, friends, businesses and the like. VITRO helped deliver on that message with this visually appealing ad ? made possible by O?Hare and his incredible use of still and motion photography.

In fact, more than 70,000 still images were captured, and a Cineflex camera was employed ? as were various tools for getting the crew high enough off the ground to get just the right shots.

Work like this isn?t really work, it?s an opportunity to use art to tell a story and deliver a message. It?s the best kind of advertising because it opens the brand up to do more. In Alaska Communications? case, they?ve been doing more since they opened for business, and ?Great Alaska? is the latest reminder of their commitment. We?re equally committed to them, and couldn?t be happier with this spot.

Modest weight loss can have lasting health benefits, research shows

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Overweight and obese individuals can achieve a decade's worth of important health benefits by losing just 20 pounds, even if they regain the weight later that decade, according to research presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention. With a focus on psychology's role in overcoming the national obesity epidemic, the session also examined research that indicates foods high in sugar and fat could have addictive properties.

Rena Wing, PhD, professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University's Alpert Medical School and director of the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at The Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I., presented the latest in behavioral treatments for obesity in an address. Kelly Brownell, PhD, director of Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, cited some of the latest findings about food addiction in his talk. Brownell and Wing were keynote speakers for the convention's opening session.

"Obesity is the No. 1 health challenge facing our country today," APA President Suzanne Bennett Johnson said in introducing Wing and Brownell. "These psychologists have each contributed greatly in combating the obesity epidemic in different ways, one on the individual patient level and the other on the public policy level."

Johnson presented APA Awards for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Psychology to Wing and Brownell for their pioneering work in obesity research.

Wing referred to her work from the Diabetes Prevention Program, a national study of 3,000 overweight people with impaired glucose tolerance who were shown how to change their behavior rather than given drugs. It showed that even modest weight loss, an average of 14 pounds, reduced people's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent, she said. What's more, the health benefits of this weight loss lasted up to 10 years, even if people gained the weight back over this time, she said. Participants in the program practiced basic behavioral strategies to help them lose weight, including tracking everything they ate and reducing the amount of unhealthy foods they kept in their home, she said. They also met with coaches frequently and increased their physical activity over the course of the study.

"Helping people find ways to change their eating and activity behaviors and developing interventions other than medication to reinforce a healthy lifestyle have made a huge difference in preventing one of the major health problems in this country," Wing said in an interview. "Weight losses of just 10 percent of a person's body weight (or about 20 pounds in those who weigh 200 pounds) have also been shown to have a long-term impact on sleep apnea, hypertension and quality of life, and to slow the decline in mobility that occurs as people age."

Wing is leading a 13-year trial of 5,000 people with Type 2 diabetes. This study is testing whether an intensive behavioral intervention can decrease the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. "We are trying to show that behavior changes not only make people healthier in terms of reducing heart disease risk factors but actually can make them live longer," she said.

Changing food policy is another prevention approach where behavioral science is addressing the U.S. obesity epidemic, according to Brownell. "We need to be courageous in establishing policies that address obesity and we need to use science to better inform public policy," he said in an interview.

Brownell focused on the addictive impact of food. "The primary question is whether foods, particularly those high in sugar, act on the brain in ways that create signs of addiction," Brownell said. "Craving and withdrawal signs can be seen in animal and human brain imaging studies conducted by investigators around the world. This could fundamentally change the debate about diet, nutrition and obesity in this country."

If foods have addictive properties, policymakers might be spurred to create laws that would set limits on certain nutrients in food and curtail advertising of these types of foods to children, he said.

University of Montana player charged with rape

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:53 p.m. ET July 31, 2012

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Prosecutors have charged University of Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson with raping an acquaintance in February after she invited him to her room to watch a movie.

Johnson was charged Tuesday with having sexual intercourse without consent.

Johnson has previously denied the allegation. Attorney David Paoli released a statement Tuesday that said Johnson and his family "are surprised and saddened" by the timing of the criminal charge, since the encounter took place in February and police have been aware of the allegation since the woman, another student, filed a report six weeks later.

"Jordan strongly maintains his innocence and looks forward to the opportunity to prove his innocence at trial, clear his name and return to pursuing his education," Paoli said in the statement.

University President Royce Engstrom said that given the charges, Johnson has been suspended from football team activities, as called for by the student athlete conduct code.

"In our profession you have to be prepared to face the unexpected," Montana head football coach Mick Delaney told the Missoulian. "This being the unexpected, we'll make an adjustment."

It's the latest turn in a sexual assault scandal at the university that has prompted three investigations by federal governmental agencies and the NCAA. The Department of Justice and Department of Education are investigating how the university and city officials responded to reports of sexual assault on campus and in Missoula.

A university investigation earlier this year found nine allegations of sexual assault that had gone unreported over 18 months, and two others have been surfaced since then.

Some have involved student athletes, but only those cases involving criminal charges have been made public. In January, running back Beau Donaldson was suspended from the team after he was charged with raping an acquaintance in September 2010. He has pleaded not guilty.

In the aftermath of that report and as the federal investigations became publicly known, Engstrom fired head football coach Robin Pflugrad and athletic director Jim O'Day, saying a change in leadership was needed.

According to Boylan's court documents, Johnson and the female student have known each other since 2010 and they began texting each other regularly in December 2011.

On Feb. 4, they decided to watch a movie together in the woman's room. He then kissed her, pulled her on top of him and tried to take off her shirt, according to the court documents.

When she resisted, he became aggressive, pulled her clothes off and raped her, Boylan wrote in the documents.

Afterward, the woman sent a text to her roommate in the next room that said, "Omg ... I think I might have just gotten raped."

"She has sought counseling and has shown signs of depression, panic and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder consistent with Rape Trauma Syndrome," Boylan wrote.

Boylan added that Johnson said it was consensual sex and that he broke off communications with the woman afterward because he liked another woman and didn't want that woman to be upset if she knew he had sex with the alleged victim.

Johnson led the Grizzlies to an 11-3 record in 2011 and a share of the Big Sky Conference Title. Montana lost in the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Johnson passed for 2,400 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, his first as a starter.

Johnson is due in court Aug. 14, the Missoulian reports.
