Hurricane Sandy disrupts Northeast U.S. telecom networks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Power outages and flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy disrupted telecommunications services in Northeastern states on Tuesday, resulting in spotty coverage for cellphones, television, home telephones and Internet services.

While all the region's telecom service providers were having problems, Verizon Communications, which serves many of the states in the hurricane's path, appeared to have suffered some of the worst damage from the storm.

The New York-based company said the storm caused flooding at three Verizon central offices that hold telecom equipment in Lower Manhattan as well as sites in Queens and Long Island.

Its downtown headquarters, which was put out of action 11 years ago by the September 11 attacks, had three feet of water in the lobby at one point. Because of flooding, all its telecom equipment at that office, which serves much of Wall Street and downtown consumers, was knocked out of service.

The company said it was working on pumping out the water in the hope that it could restart its back-up power generators in the facility as commercial power services were not yet restored the morning after the big storm hit.

"The bullseye of the impact is the metro area," said spokesman William Kula, adding that restoring service for the city's financial district was a top priority for Verizon.

Telecom disruptions affect electronic trading as well as corporate operators. The Chief Operating Officer of the New York Stock Exchange, which does not expect to open again until Wednesday, said "lots of telecom infrastructure is down" and that the NYSE was working with big firms to ensure they were doing testing of their systems.

Verizon did not give an estimate as to how many businesses and consumers were affected. Two of three Manhattan central offices were partially flooded and operating minimal services.

Customers served by the damaged central offices will experience "a loss of all services" including TV, Internet, and traditional telephone services, Kula said. Some customers may experience intermittent busy signals for non-emergency calls.

Verizon said its engineers were working on assessing the damage from the early hours. Outside of New York, the company warned that it was also having some trouble.

"Verizon is discovering that many poles and power lines/Verizon cables are down throughout the region due to heavy winds and falling trees," the company said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA said they were dealing with wireless service problems in the hurricane region. Cable operators Cablevision Systems Corp, Comcast Corp and Time Warner Cable also said they were having service problems.

"I think everybody's equipment's going to be damaged, including cellphone towers," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher King said from his Verizon Wireless cellphone in Baltimore.

"Particularly for Verizon, they're clearly going to have the most damage on the wireline side because its pretty much all of their territory (where the storm hit)," King said.

Sprint Nextel, the No. 3 U.S. mobile provider said it was seeing outages at some cell sites because of the power outages across all the states in Sandy's path including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Maryland, North Virginia and New England.

"(Repair crews) have started on some critical areas but they haven't been able to get to everywhere they need to be," spokeswoman Crystal Davis said. She noted that 80 of the company's stores would reopen at noon. Sprint had closed about 180 stores ahead of the storm.

T-Mobile USA said that "customers may be experiencing service disruptions or an inability to access service in some areas, especially those that were hardest hit by the storm."

People complained of outages to their cable telephone, Internet and television services from providers including Comcast, Cablevision and Verizon in New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York.

Cablevision said it was experiencing widespread service interruptions primarily related to loss of power. The company said it is working to restore services.

Comcast, whose headquarters is in Philadelphia and serves East Coast states, said that for the majority of customers, "Comcast service should be restored as power comes back on to their homes."

Cellphone service was spotty for top wireless providers Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, according to some customers.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, said on Tuesday afternoon that customers may be experiencing service issues and that about 94 percent of its cell sites were up and running.

AT&T said it was experiencing some issues in areas heavily affected by the storm. By Tuesday morning spokesman Mark Siegel said AT&T was in the initial stages of on-the-ground assessment and that it expected "crews will be working around the clock to restore service."

Several Time Warner Cable customers in Brooklyn said that their Internet, television and phone services stopped working Monday night but were back again by Tuesday morning.

Time Warner Cable said that while it has not seen any major damage to its infrastructure, its customers who do not have electricity do not have cable services.

Millions of people in the eastern United States awoke on Tuesday to flooded homes, fallen trees and widespread power outages caused by Sandy, which swamped New York City's subway system and submerged streets in Manhattan's financial district.

At least 30 people were reported killed in the United States by one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country. Sandy dropped just below hurricane status before making landfall on Monday night in New Jersey.

Top 10 Fitness Trends Picked for 2013

Oct. 29, 2012 -- Forget fancy fitness fads. Your body is the only equipment you need for one of the hottest fitness trends: body-weight workouts.

A new survey of fitness trends shows body-weight training, including back-to-basics exercises like push-ups, planks, and pull-ups, is expected to be one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013.

Researchers say people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training. But this is the first time it has made it into the trend survey, because gyms are now packaging it as part of exercise programs.

?Body-weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? says researcher Walt Thompson, PhD, of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body-weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

Top Fitness Trends Predicted for 2013

Taking the top spot in the fitness trend survey for the sixth year in a row are fitness professionals.

Researchers say education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are experiencing exponential growth. The number of employed fitness trainers is projected to rise by 29% from 251,400 in 2010 to 311,800 in 2020.

According to the survey, the top 10 fitness trends predicted for 2013 are:

1. Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals -- Jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

2. Strength training -- In the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row, strength training continues to be a strong trend. No longer restricted to body building, most people now incorporate some form of weight training to improve or maintain muscle strength.

3. Body-weight training -- Body-weight exercises use minimal equipment and include push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats.

4. Children and obesity -- Exercise programs aimed at the problem of childhood obesity are also a major fitness trend. Schools are increasingly partnering with commercial and community-based physical activity programs to prevent and treat rising childhood obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss -- Consistently in the top 20 fitness trends, researchers say most popular diet plans incorporate exercise to encourage weight loss.

6. Fitness programs for older adults -- Fitness clubs are capitalizing on an aging baby boomer generation with age-appropriate exercise programs.

7. Personal training -- As more personal trainers are becoming certified, they are becoming more accessible in a variety of settings, such as corporate wellness, community-based, and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness -- Researchers define functional fitness as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to perform activities of daily living. Functional fitness programs are designed to reflect actual activities done as a function of daily living and are often used in fitness programs for older adults.

9. Core training -- Using equipment like balance balls and wobble boards, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the mid-section. Researchers say exercising the core muscles in the hips, lower back, and abdomen improves overall stability for daily activities and sports performance.

10. Group personal training -- A boon for budget-conscious clients, personal trainers now often provide services to small groups of two to four people at deep discounts.

The survey was completed by 3,346 health and fitness professionals worldwide and appears in the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health & Fitness Journal.

Messi receives Golden Boot as Europe's top scorer

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:48 a.m. ET Oct. 29, 2012

The Associated Press

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was presented with his second Golden Boot award on Monday in recognition for scoring the most goals in Europe's domestic leagues last season.

The 25-year-old Messi scored a Spanish-league record 50 goals for Barcelona, edging out fellow Spanish league star Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid by four goals.

Messi dedicated the award to his teammates, with Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol present for the ceremony in Barcelona.

"It is a prize for scoring goals, but without my teammates I couldn't have scored them," Messi said. "I share this award with them as I always do.

"I don't fight for individual awards, I fight for titles. My goals are reclaiming the league crown, winning the Copa del Rey and the winning the Champions League again. Those are my goals, team goals."

The Argentina international won his first Golden Boot in 2010 for his 34 goals that helped Barcelona win the league title.

Messi is among the favorites to win the 2012 Ballon d'Or for the world's best player.

"We won't see another player like him, and if we do, it won't be for a very long time," said Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova. "It's not just for the goals he scores, but for how he sees and understands the game, that is what makes him so great. On Saturday, he ran 50 meters to defend a corner in the 89th minute with a 5-0 lead. Not many players would have done that."

Luis Suarez Miramontes, the former Spain international and 1960 Ballon d'Or winner, presented the award.

Messi, nicknamed "The Flea" for his uncanny ability to dribble through defenders, has shattered a number of records over the past year.

He scored an unprecedented 73 goals in all competitions for Barcelona last season, breaking the previous European club record of 67 goals set by Bayern Munich's Gerd Mueller in 1972-73 and the prior world club mark of 70 established by Archie Stark of Bethlehem Steel in the American Soccer League in 1924-25.

In March, Messi passed Cesar Rodriguez's 57-year-old milestone of 232 goals to become Barcelona all-time leading scorer. He also scored a European Cup-record-tying 14 goals in the Champions League, where he netted a record five goals in one game.

Messi has scored 17 goals in all competitions to start this season, and has his sights set on yet another milestone he is sure to reach very soon. He is just two goals away from equaling Brazil great Pele's feat of 75 goals for club and country in one calendar year, set in 1958.

"Obviously, it's an honor to be close to the numbers of a person who is so important to football," Messi said. "But, again, they are only statistics.

"My goal is to win as many titles as I can before the end of my career. I have always been like that. Then I can look back at what I have won and take stock of my career."

Bulgaria nationalists rally in support of Muslims' trial

PAZARDZHIK, Bulgaria (Reuters) - Hundreds of nationalists rallied in a southern Bulgarian town on Monday in support of the prosecution of 13 religious leaders accused of spreading radical Islam in a case causing communal strains in the Balkan country.

The trial, just months after a suicide bomber killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian driver at the Black Sea port of Burgas, has tested a delicate ethnic balance between the country's minority Muslims and its Orthodox Christian majority.

Prosecutors in the southern town of Pazardzhik have charged 12 Bulgarian citizens, most of them Muslim prayer leaders, and one woman for preaching radical Islam between 2008 and 2010. Three of them are also charged with inciting religious hatred.

Protesters, led by far-right parties Attack and VMRO, waved banners reading "Our religion is Bulgaria" and "Tough sentences for fanatics", and said the march aimed to counter gatherings of Muslims in front of the courthouse in support of the accused.

The suspects, who deny any wrongdoing, face up to five years in prison if convicted.

They are accused of working with an unregistered branch of Al Waqf-Al Islami, an Islamic foundation set up in the Netherlands and funded mainly by "Salafi circles" from Saudi Arabia, the court said, referring to an ultra-conservative brand of Islam.

About 100 Muslims also rallied near the court under heavy police protection in support of the accused, saying the 13 had preached only traditional Islam. Bulgaria's Mufti Office has also declared its support for the accused.

The trial has the potential to threaten a culture of tolerance in Bulgaria, where Muslims make up about 12 percent of the 7.3 million population, analysts said.

Bulgaria is the only European Union (EU) country where Muslims are not recent immigrants but a centuries-old local community, mostly ethnic Turkish descendants of Ottoman rule that ended in 1878.

"Trials like this could dramatically raise tension in the places where Bulgarian Muslims live," said Antonina Zhelyazkova, head of the Sofia-based International Center for Minority Studies.

The trial has revived memories of the 1980s when hundreds of Muslims were forced to change their names to Bulgarian ones and over 300,000 left the country as a result of a campaign by late communist dictator Todor Zhivkov to revive mainstream Bulgarian culture.

Nationalist parties are also trying to use the trial to gain popularity before a general election next year, analysts said.

Israel has accused Iran and the Lebanese Islamist group Hezbollah of being behind the Burgas attack. Iran has denied the charge and accused Israel of carrying it out.

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File)

The biggest man on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team got the most votes.

Seven-foot sophomore center Cody Zeller, the main reason Indiana is the preseason No. 1 for the first time in 33 years, was one vote shy of being a unanimous selection for the preseason All-America team.

Zeller, who averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 62.3 percent from the field, received 64 votes from the national media panel which selects the weekly Top 25.

Also on the team announced Monday were junior forwards Doug McDermott of Creighton and Deshaun Thomas of Ohio State and three guards ? seniors Isaiah Canaan of Murray State and C.J. McCollum of Lehigh and sophomore Trey Burke of Michigan.

McDermott was named on 62 ballots, while Canaan was on 43 and Thomas 26. McCollum and Burke tied for the fifth spot with 16 votes each.

Zeller is one of five starters back for the Hoosiers and when a top-flight recruiting class is added in there are a lot expectations for the No. 1 team.

"I don't know that we've really set any goals as a team, but obviously, we want to win a national championship," Zeller said. "We're not going to guarantee anything. We're just going to play and see where it takes us."

McDermott, who averaged 22.9 points (third in the nation) and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 60.1 percent from the field and 48.6 percent on 3s for the Bluejays last season in earning first-team All-America honors, has the added pressure of playing for his father, Greg. The relationship is the key to Creighton trying to become the latest mid-major to possibly go deep in the NCAA tournament.

"We have a lot of expectations on ourselves," Doug McDermott said. "We know we can go far. You see Butler, VCU, teams like that that make it to the Final Four and even the national championship game. We're not thinking that far ahead, but we know we're capable of doing what those teams have done in the past."

Canaan earned second-team All-America honors last season when he led Murray State to a 23-game winning streak to start the season, top 10 ranking, the third round of the NCAA tournament and a 31-2 record. A lot of Racers fans waited breathlessly for Canaan to announce he would skip the NBA draft and return for his senior season

Canaan averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 45.6 percent from 3-point range.

"Having him back is great, and he's a tremendous kid," Murray State coach Steve Prohm said. "He will go down as if not the best player, one of the best players, ever to play at Murray State. Anytime you have an elite guard as a coach that makes you feel really good."

Thomas averaged 16 points and 5.5 rebounds a game last season playing in the same frontcourt with first-team All-America Jared Sullinger. While Sullinger left for the NBA, Thomas decided to come back and join two other returning starters in trying to get the Buckeyes past the national semifinals where they lost to Kansas.

"I knew one more year would be good for me," the 6-7 Thomas said. "I came back just for one reason ? to also go to the national championship and to win the Big Ten."

McCollum grabbed headlines last season in earning Patriot League Player of the Year honors and plenty of attention from NBA scouts. The 6-3 McCollum averaged 21.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season, leading the Mountain Hawks in all three categories. He really opened eyes when he scored 30 points in Lehigh's NCAA tournament upset of Duke.

"C.J. has been a very reliable performer on the floor and has grown as a leader over the course of his career," Lehigh coach Brett Reed said. "Our team has a great deal of confidence because C.J. exudes confidence in his performance and that ultimately transfers to his teammates. They feel more confident in their ability because he handles pressure situations and adversity very well."

The 6-foot Burke averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists in a freshman season that saw the Wolverines crack the top 10 and share the Big Ten title.

"I'm pumped," Burke said of the upcoming season. "I'm really excited. The level of talent we have, I'm excited to see how far we can go."

Zeller, McCollum and Burke all were honorable mention selections last season.

Mandatory flu vaccine for health care workers to protect patients

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? All health care workers in health care institutions should be vaccinated with the annual influenza vaccine to protect patients, argues an editorial in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"Each season, 20% of health care workers get influenza, and 28% of young healthy adults who get it have asymptomatic or subclinical infections," writes Dr. Ken Flegel, Senior Associate Editor, CMAJ. "Some of them may shed virus up to a day before symptoms appear. It is time that all people who work in a health care institution be vaccinated."

In Canada, there are approximately 20 000 hospital admissions related to influenza and an estimated 4000 to 8000 deaths attributed to the illness. However, 55%󈞭% of physicians do not get vaccinated against the flu and are putting patients at risk of illness and death.

Dr. Flegel argues that flu vaccination for health workers must be compulsory, although there could be exemptions for medical or religious reasons. A vaccination rate above 90% is required to prevent outbreaks in hospitals. Mandatory programs for health care workers in many US institutions have resulted in participation rates of about 95%.

"Our schools have shown us the way. During measles outbreaks, access to schools has been successfully denied to nonvaccinated children and staff. The time has come for health care institutions to demand that all health care workers be vaccinated. Our patients' lives depend on this change," Dr. Flegel concludes.

Livescribe outs Sky WiFi Smartpen for 160, lets you record written notes and audio right to Evernote

The Pulse pen couldn't do it. The more recent Echo couldn't manage it either. But sending notes and linked audio wirelessly is what Livescribe's latest digital pen is all about. Branded the Sky WiFi Smartpen, it works with proprietary physical notebooks to preserve your handwritten notes and linked audio files on a minimum of 2GB of onboard storage, and then it sends them directly to your Evernote account via WiFi -- from where you can access them on pretty much any PC, tablet or smartphone. If you're wondering a how the pen selects the right network and enters a password, then it's actually pretty straightforward: Livescribe's new stationery is printed with connection buttons that, in conjunction with the OLED display on the pen itself, guide you through the procedure in a few seconds. The latest notebooks also have buttons for sending your captured thoughts to Google Drive, Dropbox and Facebook, although those services won't be activated until early next year.

The basic 2GB Sky pen will arrive in stores on November 1st, priced substantially higher than its predecessor, the Echo (which will be phased out at the end of next year). The new base model will cost $170, with 4GB and 8GB varieties priced at $200 and $250. Arguably, the reliance on wireless cloud storage means that the amount of onboard memory isn't so important any more, but if you do decide to opt for the most expensive model then you'll also get a year's subscription to Evernote Premium, which is worth $45. There's a short explanatory video after the break, and as you'll see from the gallery below we've already got the Sky pen in our clutches, so expect a full review in short order.

GPS-Free Tech Can Track Miners' and Soldiers' Boots Underground

Wearable sensors can measure footsteps to analyze workers' and soldiers' low-signal or underground locations at sites where GPS fails

MINT system A conceptual view of the MINT system. Image: Courtesy Carnegie Mellon National Robotics Engineering Center

A mining crew is trapped deep underground after a cave-in. Firefighters run into a smoke-spewing high-rise to battle a violent blaze. A team of soldiers breaches a door and storms into a dark building.

In any of these life-threatening scenarios, the direst question on the lips of rescuers or supervisors is, ?Where are they right now??

Dr. Alonzo Kelly, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University?s National Robotics Engineering Center, has a solution to answer that query. He and his team have figured a way to accurately locate people in places like buildings and mines where there is no GPS signal to help out.

And the answer fits inside the heel of a shoe.

Finding the way with each footfall
They have created a wearable suite of sensors that measure footsteps to analyze a person?s location. The system uses dead reckoning, a navigation method that calculates current position based on the direction and speed a user has moved away from a known starting point.

Dubbed MINT, short for Micro-Inertial Navigation Technology, the system is comprised of a computer and three sensor units embedded in a pair of boots. In the heel of each boot sits an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The ball area of one of the boots is fitted with a tiny radar device that measures the distance each IMU travels with each footstep.

?We?re building reference as users move around,? Kelly says. ?We can draw their path overlaid on a map or floor plan of a building or a mine.?

MINT isn?t needed where GPS is available. The problem is that GPS only works where a receiver can pick up a signal from satellites. But people often find themselves in places where reception drops to zero?inside buildings and urban canyons, underground, underwater and below dense tree canopies.

The average person?s walking speed equates to about 3,600 steps an hour, which means MINT performs that many reference position updates as a user walks around. It also means that the system?s location accuracy improves as time passes. Kelly says it can now provide a wearer?s position accurate to better than 33 feet within 30 minutes of walking around.

For soldiers and firefighters in buildings
Funding for the project comes from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the military version of the MINT unit is more accurate. Since the system?s positioning data can be transmitted from a wearer to a supervisor or command center, Its possible military applications include coordinating soldiers? movements while searching caves and clearing buildings. In a post on its website, Darpa says it is looking for accuracy ?on the order of 1 meter [3.3 ft.] over 10 hours??

?The combination of micro scale navigation aiding sensors will provide navigation accuracy that a traditional IMU ? equipped with only accelerometers and gyroscopes ? cannot accomplish,? the agency says.

Though MINT has not yet gone through the process to put it on the market, Kelly says components for a unit useful to firefighters or miners currently costs $500. The military-grade unit?s pieces cost $5,000. He estimates that three engineers could have a commercial prototype ready in a year.

?There?s an intense interest from the firefighting community in what we?re doing,? he says. ?A supervisor could track where firefighters are and monitor them, or the system could let a firefighter retrace his path to get out of a building.?

Any discussion of great muscle cars must include the 1971 Plymouth ...

"1971 Plymouth HEMI ?Cuda Convertible"

1971 Plymouth HEMI ?Cuda Convertible

When it comes to fast cars, the 1971 Plymouth Cuda exudes power and speed in its design. The vehicle has been used in many TV shows and movies as well as being one of the best collectors items when it comes to automotive shows and auctions. The HEMI engine helps to give the Cuda its power and performance while the classic lines and body panels make the vehicle very aerodynamic.

The 1971 Cuda featured a number of engine sizes including either a 198 cubic inch or 225 cubic inch inline slant-6 engine or the option of a V-8 engine in the 318, 340, 360 or 383 cubic inch sizes. For real power, the Cuda featured an optional 426 Hemi engine or a 440 cubic inch 4-barrel super commando engine.

The Plymouth Barracuda was originally introduced in 1964 and went through a number of design changes with the 1971 version becoming the most popular. The 1971 Cuda Convertible included a shorter platform design than its previous versions and the engine bay was enlarged to make room for a larger and more powerful engine.

The Cuda also included a 4-speed manual transmission with a redesigned front grill and pinstriping that added more impact to the overall look. The vehicle also featured a shaker hood design and a rear axle that was beefed up to provide better performance. The convertible styling gave the Cuda a very popular design option that made the difference from earlier Cuda styles.

Today the 1971 Cuda Convertible is still one of the most highly sought after muscle cars with auction prices reaching as high as $2 million for one of these classic vehicles. The Cuda is one of the best examples of fast cars in the late muscle car era. When you are ready for a classic vehicle that not only represents the best of American automotive design, but also is a great investment and is growing in value all the time, this is the vehicle you need. It is also a great vehicle to restore and have fun driving around in. You will definitely get noticed!

Crusty foods may worsen heart problems associated with diabetes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A University of Illinois study suggests avoiding cooking methods that produce the kind of crusty bits you'd find on a grilled hamburger, especially if you have diabetes and know you're at increased risk for cardiovascular disease because of your diagnosis.

"We see evidence that cooking methods that create a crust -- think the edge of a brownie or the crispy borders of meats prepared at very high temperatures -- produce advanced glycation end products (AGEs). And AGEs are associated with plaque formation, the kind we see in cardiovascular disease," said Karen Chapman-Novakofski, a U of I professor of nutrition.

For years nutrition experts have advised people with diabetes to bake, broil, or grill their food instead of frying it, she said.

"That's still true, but if you have diabetes, you should know that AGEs -- byproducts of food preparation methods that feature very high, intense, dry heat -- tend to end up on other tissues in the body, causing long-term damage," she added.

If you're fighting this vascular buildup anyway, Chapman-Novakofski thinks that consuming products containing AGEs could worsen the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.

In the U of I study, the scientists compared the 10-day food intake of 65 study participants in two ethnic groups: Mexicans (who have higher rates of diabetes and a greater risk of complications from the disease) and non-Hispanic whites.

"We found that people with higher rates of cardiovascular complications ate more of these glycated products. For each unit increase in AGEs intake, a study participant was 3.7 times more likely to have moderate to high risk for cardiovascular disease," said Claudia Luevano-Contreras, first author of the study.

The study showed that non-Hispanic whites had a higher intake of AGEs, and they consumed more saturated fats. However, the association between AGEs and cardiovascular disease was stronger than for saturated fats and heart disease, she said.

Eating less saturated fat and more fruits, vegetables, and fiber are important for people with diabetes, but this study shows that food preparation may be important too, she added.

"AGEs are higher in any kind of meat, but especially in ground meat," she said. "If you put hamburgers or brats on the grill, you'll likely have a higher AGEs content than if you chose a whole cut of meat, say round steak or chicken," said Chapman-Novakofski.

Boiling or stewing meat would reduce your AGEs intake further. And scrambling an egg with cooking spray instead of frying it leads to a significant reduction in AGEs, she added.

The scientists said more research is needed before definite recommendations can be made. They are planning another study in which they'll examine past AGEs intake of diabetes patients.

"These findings are preliminary, but they give us ample reason to further explore the association between AGEs and cardiovascular risk among people with diabetes," Chapman-Novakofski noted.

The study is available online in the International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition. Co-authors are Claudia Luevano-Contreras of the University of Illinois and Eugenia Garay-Sevilla and Monica Preciado-Puga of the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. Partial funding was provided by the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT).

The problem with presidential debates ? CNN Radio News - CNN ...

By Lisa Desjardins, CNN

(CNN) ? For 25 years, a private non-profit group of roughly a dozen people, operating without oversight, has been running America's presidential and vice-presidential debates.

To some, the Commission on Presidential Debates is a political hero, providing thoughtful stability and ensuring that U.S. presidential candidates do in fact debate each other. Multiple times. In a dignified setting.

But to its critics, the Commission is a small, secretive and closed-minded organization that colludes with the political parties, is out-of-touch with modern voters, and prevents third-party candidates from getting on the debate stage.

Among those critics is George Farah, founder and executive director of Open Debates:

[0:41] "In 1996 Ross Perot was running for president. Three-quarters of the American people wanted to see him and I thought it would be fascinating to see him debating again. And when he was shut out, I was astonished and I thought, who is doing this? What entity is making this happen?"?

Since that 1996 disappointment, Farah has become a lightening rod in the presidential debate world.

His organization, Open Debates, relentlessly pushes for changes, like adding more debates, reducing involvement from political parties, a lower bar for candidates to get into the debates, and a broader variety of formats including more candidate interaction and panels of experts asking questions.

This year, his criticism has been particularly sharp on a subject in the headlines, something called the "Memo of Understanding", a secret document negotiated by the political campaigns that lays out debate parameters.

This year's 21-page Memo of Understanding caused a 24-hour firestorm when it was leaked to Time's Mark Halperin prior to last week's town hall debate. It indicated the debate moderator would not be allowed to ask follow-up questions.

But the Commission on Presidential Debates insists that it's not a party to that document and while candidates may agree between themselves to certain rules, like not asking each other questions, the Commission is not governed by that deal.

A source close to planning for the debate last week confirmed to CNN that moderator Candy Crowley never saw the campaigns' Memo of Understanding and that the Commission never asked her to hold back on follow-up questions.

Commission leaders insist they have not signed off on any such memo between the candidates since at least 2000.

That year, the two campaigns involved presented a hefty, 56-page list of demands. Frank Fahrenkopf is co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates:

[3:25] "The [Bush and Gore campaigns] said if you don?t sign this and you don?t get the moderators to sign this, we?ll go elsewhere. And we said, fine, go elsewhere. We?re not signing it."

Editor's Note: Criticisms of the Commission do not end there. Listen to the complete story above?for a look at other issues in the presidential debate system and how the Commission on Presidential Debates responds, and then join the conversation below.

How fear can skew spatial perception

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? That snake heading towards you may be further away than it appears. Fear can skew our perception of approaching objects, causing us to underestimate the distance of a threatening one, finds a study published in Current Biology.

"Our results show that emotion and perception are not fully dissociable in the mind," says Emory psychologist Stella Lourenco, co-author of the study. "Fear can alter even basic aspects of how we perceive the world around us. This has clear implications for understanding clinical phobias."

Lourenco conducted the research with Matthew Longo, a psychologist at Birkbeck, University of London.

People generally have a well-developed sense for when objects heading towards them will make contact, including a split-second cushion for dodging or blocking the object, if necessary. The researchers set up an experiment to test the effect of fear on the accuracy of that skill.

Study participants made time-to-collision judgments of images on a computer screen. The images expanded in size over one second before disappearing, to simulate "looming," an optical pattern used instinctively to judge collision time. The study participants were instructed to gauge when each of the visual stimuli on the computer screen would have collided with them by pressing a button.

The participants tended to underestimate the collision time for images of threatening objects, such as a snake or spider, as compared to non-threatening images, such as a rabbit or butterfly.

The results challenge the traditional view of looming, as a purely optical cue to object approach. "We're showing that what the object is affects how we perceive looming. If we're afraid of something, we perceive it as making contact sooner," Longo says.

"Even more striking," Lourenco adds, "it is possible to predict how much a participant will underestimate the collision time of an object by assessing the amount of fear they have for that object. The more fearful someone reported feeling of spiders, for example, the more they underestimated time-to-collision for a looming spider. That makes adaptive sense: If an object is dangerous, it's better to swerve a half-second too soon than a half-second too late."

The researchers note that it's unclear whether fear of an object makes the object appear to travel faster, or whether that fear makes the viewer expand their sense of personal space, which is generally about an arm's length away.

"We'd like to distinguish between these two possibilities in future research. Doing so will allow us to shed insight on the mechanics of basic aspects of spatial perception and the mechanisms underlying particular phobias," Lourenco says.

What You Need To Do To Become A Trading Pro - Bankruptcy ...

Expert Trading Advice

If you had a genie, one of the things you?d probably wish for is to become a successful trader. As most people would know though, this isn?t something you can achieve with little effort. Fortunately, it isn?t impossible even if it is difficult. What you need to do is to follow the right advice to get started.

The first step isn?t to start listening to financial news and tips. What you should do first is to find out what you want to trade. There are several markets you can go into. Aside from stocks, you can also trade currencies, options and commodities. If you?ve never tried trading however, it?s usually a good idea to start with stocks. They?re the most widely understood so there are plenty of resources for you to tap.

With a market to start trading in, you then need to set in place a reliable trading system. What many traders find is ideal is to create custom systems. You also have the option though to simply take an existing and well publicized system, make adjustments to it and use it as your own.

Having a system is only part of your preparation done. You also need to spend time testing it. This is the only way you can ensure your plan isn?t flawed. The best way to go about this is through back testing. In this process, you use your system with various historical data. If it comes out a winner, it?ll be safe for you to conclude that it?ll work well for you in actual trading.

The best trading system should be able to do wonders for you. Sometimes though, the flaw lies not in the system but in the person. You?d be sabotaging your own success if you don?t have the discipline to let your system run the show. You should adopt the type of trading psychology that doesn?t interfere with a solid system even if it occasionally makes you lose.

With a tested system and the discipline to follow it, what you?ll need next is charting software. There are so many choices to consider and picking just one won?t be easy. You can however come up with criteria to help make your task of choosing easier. Pick a package that is flexible enough to allow you to incorporate your specifications and to function with third party data providers like MetaStock Market Data.

One last thing you need to pick is your broker. You can?t place trades without one. You have the choice between a full service provider and a discount provider. Full service professionals provide extra tips and advice. This might seem like a good deal. However, if you know your system is a winner, you don?t need the extra advice. You can save your money by putting your trust on your system rather than paying extra for broker tips.

It doesn?t take a genius to figure out that it?ll probably take years of hard work and effort to become a professional at trading. For beginners though, these tips and tools should be more than enough to get you started the right way. Find out more about becoming a pro through the MetaStock Guide.

(AP) ? South Korean activists floated balloons carrying tens of thousands of anti-Pyongyang leaflets into North Korea on Monday, eluding police who had disrupted an earlier launch attempt due to threats from North Korea.

North Korea's military warned last week that it would strike if the South Korean activists carried through with their plan to fly balloons carrying the propaganda leaflets across the border. South Korea pledged to retaliate if it was attacked.

South Korean police, citing security concerns, had sent hundreds of officers Monday to seal off roads and prevent the activists and other people from gathering at an announced launch site near the border. Residents in the area were also asked to evacuate to underground facilities, according to local official Kim Jin-a.

Later in the day, some of the activists, mostly North Korean defectors, moved to another site near the border that was not guarded by police and carried out the launch of the balloons. South Korea's Defense Ministry said it was closely monitoring North Korea's military movements but there were no suspicious activities.

Before taking action Monday, the South Korean government had implored activists to stop their campaign, but had cited freedom of speech in not making further attempts to intervene.

South Korean activists have in the past sent leaflets across the border, and North Korea has issued similar threats to attack without following through. But Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported Monday that the ban on entering the border area was imposed as South Korea detected that North Korea had uncovered artillery muzzle covers and deployed troops to artillery positions in possible preparation for an attack. Yonhap cited no source for the information.

Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters Monday that North Korea was believed to have acted in line with carrying out its threat. He declined to elaborate on the North's army movement as that was confidential military information.

He said South Korea had bolstered its military readiness following the North's threat and would "strongly" retaliate if attacked.

The activists said they floated balloons carrying about 120,000 leaflets critical of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un and his country's alleged human rights abuses. They said they wanted to let North Korean people know the true nature of their country.

"We could not delay our plans to send anti-North Korea leaflets because it is our love toward our northern brothers," the activists wrote in a statement posted on the website of Seoul-based Free North Korea Radio, one of civic organizations involved in the leafleting.

Lead activist Park Sang-hak had said the ban on entering the border area was tantamount to yielding to Pyongyang's threat.

"It's surrender. It's clearly surrender," he said.

On Monday, the top U.S. envoy on North Korea urged Pyongyang to stop issuing destabilizing threats.

"It is grossly disproportionate to have threatened to respond to balloons with bombs," Glyn Davies told reporters in Beijing after meeting with Chinese officials.

China, the North's main ally and biggest aid source, welcomed South Korean efforts to quash the balloon-flying and urged all parties to exercise restraint.

"As a close neighbor to the peninsula, China supports dialogue and discussions between North Korea and South Korea in resolving relevant issues, opposes any action which may heighten tension, and firmly opposes military conflicts on the peninsula," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing. "We hope the parties involved will stay calm and restrained."

Ties between the rival Koreas were badly strained after two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.

The Korean Peninsula officially remains at war because an armed conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The latest flare-up in tensions comes as almost all the regional players are consumed with domestic politics. Elections are being held or are expected soon in South Korea, the United States and Japan, while China's Communist Party is in the midst of transferring power to a younger generation of leaders.
