Sea level rose 60 percent faster than UN projections, study finds

A recent study published in the journal "Nature" suggests the U.S. may experience a 5-foot rise in sea level given all of the fossil fuel that has already been burned. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Projections for sea level rise in coming decades could be too conservative, experts warned Wednesday, saying they found that the rise over the last two decades is much more than predicted by the U.N. scientific body tracking climate signals.

In a peer-reviewed study, the experts said satellite data show sea levels rose by 3.2?millimeters?(0.1 inch) a year from 1993 to 2011 ??60 percent faster than the 2 mm annual rise projected by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for that period.?

"This suggests that IPCC sea-level projections for the future may also be biased low," the team wrote in the journal Environmental Research Letters.?

The experts also said the IPCC was just about spot on with its predictions for warming temperatures.

"Global warming has not slowed down or is lagging behind the projections," lead author Stefan Rahmstorf, a researcher at Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, said in a statement. "The IPCC is far from being alarmist and in fact in some cases rather underestimates possible risks."?

The experts added that the faster sea level rise is unlikely to be caused by a temporary ice discharge from Greenland or Antarctica ice sheets because it correlates very well with the increase in global temperature.

The IPCC earlier estimated that seas rose by about 7 inches over the last century, and its most recent report, published in 2007, estimated a range of between?7 and 23 inches this century ? enough to worsen coastal flooding and erosion during storm surges.

But the IPCC report did not factor in a possible acceleration of the melt of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

The IPCC "assumed that Antarctica will gain enough (ice) mass" to compensate for Greenland ice loss, the new?study's authors noted, but?more recent studies have shown that "the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are increasingly losing mass."

Related: Ice melt found across 97 percent of Greenland

Rahmstorf told Reuters his best estimate for sea level rise was between 20 inches and three feet this century, possibly more if greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide surged.

In the past century, as the climate has warmed, sea level rise has accelerated. Scientists predict it will only increase, and they're studying changes in the ocean and land to better understand how and why the water is rising. NBC's Anne Thompson reports for "Changing Planet," produced by NBC Learn in partnership with the National Science Foundation.

The IPCC chair, addressing delegates to international climate talks being held in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday made note of the recent findings on ice loss and sea level rise.

The next IPCC report, Rajendra Pachauri?promised, will have "a better appreciation of mass loss of the large ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica."

When the next IPCC report comes out in March 2014, he added, expect "a?more quantitative understanding?of ongoing sea level rise" ? and an entire chapter on the topic.

BT lets site visitors add features to landlines with only a phone number and postcode

BT site

If you're subscribed to BT's landline phone service, you may want to keep an eye on your bill in the near future. The British provider recently patched up a website issue that showed account holders' full names, but attention is being drawn to an approach that lets visitors add paid features like TV service using only an account's phone number and postcode as credentials. When both of these are potentially in the public eye, that creates understandable concerns that a rogue agent could hike someone's rates without consent -- even the email address BT uses to confirm changes is only chosen on the spot, which could keep the change a secret early on. BT so far contends that the light security is for "customer convenience," although we've reached out to verify whether or not that will continue to be the company's policy going forward. In the meantime, those still on the carrier's traditional phone service will want to be careful about giving out their number to strangers; while the risk isn't extreme in practice, there's no need to hand someone the keys to the kingdom.

Google launches campaign against possible fees

BERLIN (AP) ? Google is launching a new campaign in Germany to protest against possible copyright restrictions being discussed in the country's Parliament.

The "Defend Your Web" campaign started Tuesday seeks to mobilize Google users against plans to introduce a so-called "Google Tax". The levy, being pushed by publishers, would require search engines to pay each time they link to media content like newspaper articles or photographs.

In a short online video, Google warns "for more than 10 years you've been able to find what you are looking for ? a planned law would change that." It also provides written information and urges people to sign an online petition.

Google also plans newspaper and magazine ads.

New Yorker charged in killings of shopkeepers of Middle Eastern origin

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Brooklyn grand jury on Tuesday indicted a clothing salesman on murder charges in the shooting deaths this year of three shopkeepers of Middle Eastern descent, prosecutors said.

Salvatore Perrone, 63, was arrested a week ago on suspicion of murder when a witness in a pharmacy matched his likeness to a photo circulated by police after it was captured on a security camera near the latest killing this month.

The grand jury accused Perrone of six counts, one of first-degree murder and one of second-degree murder for each of the three victims, who were shot on July 6, August 2 and November 16, the Brooklyn District Attorney said in a statement. If convicted he faces a life sentence in prison without parole.

A defense lawyer for Perrone could not be reached for comment.

All three victims were killed in clothing stores they owned, and all were killed by the same gun, prosecutors said.

Upon arresting Perrone, police said a .22-caliber rifle was recovered in a duffel bag belonging to him at his girlfriend's apartment, and that ballistic tests found shell casings retrieved from the three crime scenes were fired from the same rifle.

Perrone's fingerprint was found on the weapon, and he made statements implicating himself, police said.

The killings began on July 6 when Mohamed Gebeli, 65, was shot in his clothing store, Valentino Fashion. On August 2, Isaac Kadare, 59, was killed in his Amazing 99 Cent Deals store. On November 16, Rahmatollah Vahidipour, 78, was gunned downed in the She She Boutique.

Perrone was an independent seller of men's and women's apparel who often called on small merchants in Brooklyn, police said.

Investigators said they had yet to determine a motive for the attacks, but police have noted all three victims were older men of Middle Eastern descent. Each shooting occurred near closing time when the victims were alone in their shops.

The heads of all the victims "were covered by either cardboard or clothing" when they were discovered, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

Reasons Why You Should Outsource: Revenue Cycle Management ...

Revenue cycle management is all about making sure that you get paid for the services you provide. This can be a time consuming and expensive process. Third party medical billing companies are in business to provide service to physicians and clinics for them to avoid spending valuable time worrying about collections and insurance company issues. However, just like any other company, third party healthcare providers are faced with costs and quick-turnaround times, which is why outsourcing seems an attractive option. Healthcare service providers create a strategic environment for revenue cycle businesses to enhance their services such as medical billing and medical coding.

Outsourcing can provide some very great benefits to a practice.

  • Increase revenue
  • Reduce expenses
  • Allow the opportunity to expand your capabilities
  • Flexibility in processes
  • Access to highly skilled personnel
  • Guaranteed quality output
  • Ability to concentrate on your core business

Increasing revenue flow is necessary for all business. When insurance claims are rejected, the time necessary to re-verify and re-submit add considerably to the collection cycle. Making sure that insurance claims are handled correctly the first time is a step in getting the revenue cycle management on track. Partnering with an outsourcing company that has a streamlined process or a customized revenue cycle management process in place can increase accuracy. Front-end and Transaction Processing functions are areas where errors occur and an efficient outsourcing partner can easily help you reduce, if not totally eliminate, those errors.

The reduction of overhead expenditures is another big reason to consider outsourcing. Each employee added to your in-house revenue cycle management team increases your expenses with the cost in wages, benefits and additional office space necessary to house them. Having an offshore outsourcing company supply you with manpower, you are guaranteed to get qualified staff for your team at a lower cost.

A great benefit of outsourcing is the qualified people to perform your processes are all ready in place. The outsourcing company has a set of qualifications and tests to ensure that the staff that they will hire can deliver quality work. It is likely that the service provider already has a talent pool of medical billers and coders. You no longer need to spend time on sourcing and recruitment for your medical billers and claims processing staff.

With the revenue cycle taken care of, you can focus on re-aligning your operations to focus on expanding your core business. Now you have the opportunity to expand your practice, offer new services or even decide if a satellite office would work. Having non core activities outside of your office allows you to really focus on what you want your business to become.

Outsourcing revenue cycle management can restore balance in your processes while ensuring that you enjoy the benefits that comes along with it. Service providers also guarantee that through the solutions they perform for your business, you also gain a competitive advantage among your competitors in the healthcare industry.

Windows 8 PC Sales "disappointing" for Microsoft

Paul Thurrott, tech blogger and Microsoft insider, reported on Friday that Windows 8 PC sales have fallen well below Microsoft's expected target.

Specifically, Thurrott's blog stated, "Sales of Windows 8 PCs are well below Microsoft's internal projections and have been described inside the company as disappointing."

Thurrott's claim about Windows 8 PC sales may be a good indicator of why the tech giant has been so reluctant, particularly with the perceived conflict-of-interest with Surface sales.

The reason for the sales slump may also be that consumers just aren't that interested in Windows 8.

Microsoft's gamble

Despite announcing the sale of four million Windows 8 upgrades in the days following the OS' release, Microsoft remains tight-lipped about any figures relating to Surface or new Windows 8 PC sales.

This may be due in part to Microsoft's perceived conflict-of-interest as it steps into the hardware business with the Surface RT.

Microsoft contends that it still fully supports all of its participating OEMs like HP, Lenovo, and Asus, even in the wake of Windows head Steven Sinofsky's departure.

Windows 8 laptops have garnered largely favorable reviews, particularly touch screen-enabled models, and have created a new, albeit smaller, niche for mobile PC users.

Managers, What's Your Plan For Climate Change? - Jordan Cohen ...

In the wake of superstorm Sandy, we've heard story after story about the big infrastructural challenges of disaster response, crisis management, and climate change. And we've heard story after story about the storm's economic toll on supply chains and small businesses. But what about the impact on individual managers?

Climate change doesn't just mean that governments and big companies will need to reassess their risk management, or make their infrastructure more resilient. It means that all of us, as individual managers, will have to figure out how to cope with power outages, damaged facilities, and employee absences ? all on very short notice.

While fewer business leader responses to Sandy have been reported in the media, I have heard a wealth of anecdotal evidence since the storm that many were quick to grasp the importance of their response as managers. As a result, these leaders conveyed the strength of leadership and values-based decision making that is commonly recognized as good for business.

Examples I've heard of include senior managers:

  • moving in with relatives and offering employees their own homes;
  • providing additional transport like car services for employees to get them to where they needed to be;
  • temporarily relocating employees to another state;
  • renting hotel rooms for staff to use;
  • distributing "go-bags" ? containing the items they would need during an evacuation ? to employees in advance of the hurricane and giving out flashlights during the outages.

In the aftermath of an event like Sandy, leaders have the opportunity not just to do the right thing as human beings and citizens, but to promote employee engagement in their organization, through promoting corporate participation in relief efforts. The feel-good factor associated with activities like volunteering are widely accepted to result in organizational benefits, not just happier employees but also reduced staff turnover and increased productivity. Research tells us that employees are most engaged when our leaders and organizations care for our well-being. According to research by Towers Watson, this comprises physical health, psychological health (including stress /anxiety, intrinsic satisfaction and safety) and social "health" (including work relationships, work-life balance and fairness).

In talking to friends and clients about the storm, it appears there are some common leadership behaviors which inspired confidence among employees. Firstly, companies that handled the storm well were quick to issue a clear statement of communication early on. This outlined the approach that they were going to take and what behaviors their employees could expect ? e.g. exceptional changes to expense policies or offers of temporary housing or relocation for those who needed it. Second, they followed up with real action, like the steps listed above, to make sure employees had the support they needed.

The time to come up with contingency plans like these is not when hurricane force winds are bearing down on your city. Instead, smart leaders will develop their emergency-response measures well in advance and communicate them to all managers, so that the next time a major weather event strikes, everyone knows exactly what to do.

Please let us know if you've seen other examples of how managers prepared for Sandy or stepped up afterward.

Indianapolis Explosion's Cause Remains Under Investigation

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? With no hint of a problem in advance, in particular no tell-tale smell of a gas leak, authorities and residents in a southern Indianapolis neighborhood are trying to make sense of an enormous blast that obliterated two homes and made dozens more uninhabitable.

Fire officials expressed amazement that only two people died in the late Saturday explosion so powerful that the devastation spread for blocks from its epicenter. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate their Richmond Hill homes, some never to return. Windows and doors were blown in. The blast rocked several houses entirely from their foundations and was so loud it awoke people three miles away. A fire burned for hours, engulfing dozens of homes.

Early Monday, Indianapolis public safety director Troy Riggs said forensic investigators were talking with utility companies and others as they tried to determine the cause.

"We need to make sure that we get some of the forensics back and that we follow where the evidence takes us," Riggs told WISH-TV.

U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, who represents the area, has said he had been told a bomb or meth lab explosion had been ruled out.

Deputy Fire Chief Kenny Bacon said investigators hadn't ruled out any possible causes.

Citizens Energy had received no calls from people in the area smelling the rotten eggs of a chemical added to natural gas, which is odorless, utility spokesman Dan Considine said.

"Most of the time when there's a gas leak, people smell it," he said. "But not always."

Carson said the National Transportation Safety Board and the federal Department of Transportation, which have oversight over pipelines, were sending investigators.

Riggs said police officers and investigators would continue to search and secure the neighborhood on Monday.

"It could take some time. We've asked people to be patient," Riggs told WRTV.

Dan Able, a 58-year-old state employee who lives across the street from the flattened homes, was puzzled by the blast.

"I'm wondering about all the possibilities it could be," he said.

Authorities set up relief operations at a school and church to shelter those displaced in the blast. Some moved in with friends and relatives. Others found hotel rooms.

Alex Pflanzer was sound asleep when the explosion blew out his windows and his wife started to scream.

"I didn't know what was going on," Pflanzer said. "I thought someone was breaking in the house, because the alarm was going off."

Pflanzer grabbed his gun and checked the house. Then he noticed the front door was open and saw a reddish glow flickering outside.

"I walked outside and all the houses were on fire," he said.

The Pflanzers and their two dogs found a hotel room, but they couldn't coax their panic-stricken cat out of a crawlspace.

"All the material things can be replaced, so I'm not worried about that stuff," he said. "People are a lot worse off than I am. People died, and so our thoughts and prayers go out to them first."

Officials have not released the identities of the two people killed. A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night at Southwest Elementary School in nearby Greenwood for second-grade teacher Jennifer Longworth. She and her husband, John Dion Longworth, lived in one of the homes destroyed in the blast. WTHR-TV reported that friends, family and colleagues of the teacher gathered at the school.

Deputy Code Enforcement Director Adam Collins said 80 homes were damaged including 31 that might need to be demolished. He estimated the damage at $3.6 million.

Some residents were allowed to return to their homes under police escort Sunday, but just to retrieve a few belongings. Others whose homes weren't as badly damaged were allowed to return, but officials said they would have to do without electricity overnight. And others, officials said, never will be allowed to go back inside their homes.

"There are houses that will have to be torn down," Bacon said.

He said the toll could have been much worse. "I know we're very fortunate that some of the people weren't home," he said.

Officials said at least two dozen off-duty police officers who live on the city's south side rushed to the scene to help with the rescue effort. More than 80 firefighters battled flames and searched the wreckage of homes for trapped survivors.

At the Southport Presbyterian Church shelter, tables were piled high with blankets, food, diapers, water and other supplies. An animal shelter on the south side of the city offered free boarding for pets whose owners had nowhere to take them.

Rev. Rob Hock said hundreds of congregants had shown up to help after he put out a call during Sunday morning services.

Iranian Cinema, Dominik Graf Center Stage at 2013 Rotterdam Film ...

COLOGNE, Germany ? Current Iranian cinema and the work of German art house director Dominik Graf will be in sharp focus at next year's International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

Rotterdam will devote a retrospective to Graf, who has been a pioneering force both in film and television in Germany for some 30 years. He has won the country's coveted Adolf Grimme Prize, arguably Germany's most prestigious small screen honor, an astounding 10 times and, in 1988, won the local equivalent of the Oscar, the German Film Prize, for best directing for his thriller The Cat.

But Graf remains largely unknown outside his home country. Rotterdam hopes to correct that with the first major retrospective of his work outside Germany. Under the title Hidden in Plain Sight, the retrospective will run as part of the IFFR's Signals section and be curated by Christoph Huber and Olaf Moller.

Iranian filmmakers have long enjoyed international acclaim, in no small part due to the support from Rotterdam and its Hubert Bals Fund, which regularly backs works by established and up-and-coming Persian directors. For its 2013 edition, Rotterdam will screen a selection of new films by directors living in Iran and by expatriate Iranians. Among the featured titles in the Inside Iran sidebar will be From Tehran To London by Mania Akbari; Mani Haghighi's Modest Reception and Parviz from director Marjid Barzegar. Rotterdam will also host a series of discussions, conferences and screening of short films and video art from Teheran-based filmmakers.

To highlight the unique experience of seeing a film in the cinema, the IFFR will present a series of live music events together with special screenings as part of a program, titled Sound Stages, dedicated to the auditory art of film. The Sound Stages program will include several one-time screenings at locations such as a church or jazz cafe in Rotterdam and will involve live music and art installations from the likes of U.S. multimedia artist Tony Cokes, British filmmaker John Akomfrah and Finnish director and visual artist Mika Taanila.

Arguably the leading festival for art house and experimental films, the IFFR last year drew 274,000 viewers and some 2,700 film professionals over the 12 days of the festival. The 42nd Rotterdam Festival runs Jan. 23 ? Feb. 3, 2013.

Verizon makes the Droid DNA official

Verizon Droid DNA

Verizon on its website this morning officially outed the HTC Droid DNA. The phone, which will be unveiled at an event Tuesday morning in New York City (we'll be there), is clearly listed under Verizon's "News and Offers" section.

What's more is that Verizon's throwing a Google Hangout on Monday, Nov. 19, at noon Eastern. A special unboxing, apparently, some six days after this week's event.

More: Exclusive first pictures of the Droid DNA

The Droid DNA is expected to be a 5-inch device, the largest thus far of HTC's traditional smartphones, and a cousin to the J Butterfly released in Japan. It should have a ridiculous 1080x1920 resolution, powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. Our previous leak pegs it at 1.5 Ghz, with 2GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear camera. It'll likely run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the new Sense 4+ user interface.

Verizon's event Tuesday is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Eastern.

Turkey: 17 soldiers killed in helicopter crash

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A Turkish military helicopter carrying soldiers on a mission against Kurdish rebels crashed because of bad weather on Saturday, killing all 17 troops onboard, officials said.

Thirteen soldiers and four military crewmembers were killed in the crash in a mountainous part of Pervari district in Siirt province, in southeastern Turkey, where the rebel Kurdistan Worker's Party is fighting for self-rule.

President Abdullah Gul said the soldiers were on their way "to help their friends" in an operation against the rebels who have escalated attacks in recent months, adding the incident would not deter Turkey from its determination to fight the rebels.

The provincial governor, Ahmet Aydin, blamed the crash on heavy fog and ruled out an attack by the rebel group.

"The weather during the transportation (of troops) was bad. There was extreme rain. The helicopter crashed into rocks because of the fog," Aydin said in televised statements. "The incident was the result of a crash and any kind of an attack is out of the question."

The Kurdish rebels have been fighting since the 1980s and they seek more rights for Kurds, including autonomy in the mostly Kurdish southeast of the country. Turkey and its Western allies categorize the rebels, known by the acronym PKK, as a terrorist group.

On Friday, the office for the governor for the nearby province of Hakkari said as many as 42 Kurdish rebels had been killed in the past three days in operations that were backed by airpower. It made no mention of any casualties among troops.

Several days ago, Turkish media reported that Turkish soldiers were airlifted into northern Iraq for a brief operation against suspected rebels, who have bases there. There were no reports of casualties on that mission. Turkey periodically carries out artillery and air strikes on PKK positions in northern Iraq, but reports of cross-border incursions by troops are rare.

Archaeologists ponder possible whodunit

Israeli archaeologists are scratching their heads over a possible 8,500-year-old murder mystery after discovering two skeletons at the bottom of an ancient well.

Flint sickle blades and arrowheads, found in the eight-meter (26 foot)-deep Stone Age well in the Jezreel Valley in Israel's Galilee region, suggest it was used by the area's first farmers.

But archaeologists cannot explain why the skeletal remains of a woman, believed by archaeologists to have been about age 19, and those of an older man were also uncovered deep inside the now-dry well.

"How did these come to be in the well? Was this an accident or perhaps murder? As of now the answer to this question remains a mystery," the Israel Antiquities Authority said in a statement.

Yotam Tepper, who directed the excavation on behalf of the authority, said that "what is clear, is that after these unknown individuals fell into the well, it was no longer used for the simple reason that the well water was contaminated and was no longer potable".

Super Minotaur- Thug Killings - Music Review

thug-killings
For garage rockers, from the Black Lips to FIDLAR, pushing buttons comes with the territory. Chicago newcomer Super Minotaur knows this better than most, with its lyrics that reach near enlightened levels of calculated controversy. Like bathroom wall poetry, this trio has a way of turning even the most sophomoric joke into a critique. See: ?Thug Killings,? a track where lines like ?come at me bro? address cultural violence, and the drug references are as tongue-in-cheek as it gets. This isn't to say these lo-fi punks are somehow profound, but the self-aware immaturity does come off as charming if you're in the right mood. Then again, an EP called Hawaii Pee probably isn't for everybody.

Verizon says HTC 8X will ship 'by 11/13', red model due on the 21st (Update: Lumia 822 too)

Waiting to get a taste of HTC's first Windows Phone 8 device on Verizon? Big Red's website says you won't have to wait beyond next week for your first shot, indicating HTC 8X pre-orders ($199 on 2-year contract, $549 retail) will ship by November 13th for the black or blue models, although the red version is held up until the 21st. That's the same day the two companies have an event scheduled in NYC -- now the only question is if the Droid DNA will make an appearance. That date is in line with what's been revealed of other carrier's plans for HTC's Windows Phone 8X, with T-Mobile on the 14th, Bell on the 15th and Rogers on the 12th.

Update: It looks like the $99 Lumia 822 we've had some hands-on time with has also been listed by Verizon, and with the same release date. Decisions, decisions.

[Thanks, Matt]

Analysis: In the end, Obama won on the economy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In the end, President Barack Obama won re-election on the issue that was supposed to send him packing: the sluggish U.S. economy.

The United States is still digging out from the deepest recession in 80 years, and employers are barely adding enough jobs to keep pace with population growth. Trillions of dollars of household wealth have vanished in the housing bubble, while the gap between rich and poor widens.

But historically, voters have given a second term to incumbent presidents who preside over even modest economic growth during an election year.

That pattern appears to have held for Obama. If the economy is not exactly roaring ahead, it improved steadily over the course of the year.

"It was never going to be a landslide," said John Sides, a political science professor at George Washington University. "But it was always his race to lose."

The Democratic president took major steps to boost the economy, but they did not seem to help him much in the eyes of voters. Polls show deep divisions on the merits of his 2009 stimulus, his Dodd-Frank financial reforms and the auto industry bailout.

But they made a difference in one important place. Obama campaigned heavily on the auto bailout in Ohio, where 1 in 8 jobs is tied to the industry.

That may have helped him limit his losses there among white men, a slice of the electorate that Romney won heavily elsewhere.

According to Reuters/Ipsos exit polls, Obama lost white men nationwide by 21 percentage points. In Ohio, he lost white men by only 12 points.

Obama was also helped by the fact that voters largely blame the recession on his Republican predecessor, President George W. Bush. Obama made that a central part of his campaign message as he argued that Romney would bring back policies that precipitated the crash.

If the Romney campaign wanted to focus the election on Obama's economic stewardship, the Obama campaign wanted to make it a choice between two candidates.

Obama's campaign attacked early with a barrage of negative advertising that painted the multimillionaire former private-equity executive as a corporate raider with little concern about the fortunes of ordinary people.

The attacks drew unflattering comparisons to Obama's historic 2008 run for office, but they discredited Romney in the eyes of many voters.

"A lot of middle-class white people who don't have a college degree came to the conclusion that Romney's just not one of us," said Potomac Research Group analyst Greg Valliere.

GRIDLOCK AHEAD

Obama's narrow re-election victory will not strike fear in the hearts of Republicans, who remain in control of the House of Representatives. Obama's Democrats held on to the Senate, but fewer moderates of either party will be in the mix.

That is a recipe for more gridlock and white-knuckle showdowns over taxes and spending. Reaching consensus on even the most routine legislation will be difficult.

"There's not going to be a lot of goodwill on the Hill," said Princeton University history professor Julian Zelizer. "The party lines will be hardened after this election."

The increased polarization may make governing more difficult, but it made campaigning easier for Obama. In an age of intense partisan sentiment, Obama enjoyed more reliable support from members of his own party than his Democratic predecessors Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

"There are just a lot fewer people who are going to shift from one candidate or another. They're just a lot more hardened on either side," said Taylor Griffin, who advised Republican nominee John McCain during the 2008 campaign.

For Republicans, Obama's re-election poses uncomfortable questions.

For the second election in a row, the Republican presidential candidate has been unable to win more than 1 in 3 Hispanic voters, and the party could have an increasingly difficult time competing in national elections if it fails to make inroads among that rapidly growing slice of the electorate.

The party's gravity center now rests in the House of Representatives, where many lawmakers represent solidly conservative districts. They face little incentive to compromise on issues like immigration reform that could anger their base of older, white voters.

Romney had to overcome lingering suspicion from conservatives during the drawn-out battle for the Republican nomination, and he was unable to appeal to independent swing voters until the campaign's closing month.

But many in the party are likely to conclude that they will be better off nominating a more conservative candidate next time, said Brookings Institution fellow John Hudak.

"The party is going to move right," he said. "The line is going to be, 'See, we shouldn't have nominated a moderate.'"
