A PR problem for software developer jobs | Idaho Business Review

Think you know how computer scientists spend their time? Amit Jain, a professor at Boise State University?s computer science department, has heard it all.

They eat only pizza. They hunch over computers for hours at a time, eschewing social contact.

They?re nerds. They?re mostly guys.

Well, the last one is true. It seems the only thing harder than attracting college students to a computer science department is attracting female students to the rigorous course work of computer programming.

But the rest of the stereotypes annoy Jain no end. Jain, who has been teaching at Boise State for 10 years, laments the misunderstandings he hears from high school students about computer science. He?s pretty sure they?re part of the reason this department graduates only 30 students each year, not the 150 he?d rather see.

Jain partly blames the media. He must mean Hollywood, not the news media. While TV shows generally portray doctors, detectives and lawyers as stunning high-flyers with swanky clothes, computer scientists are far more likely to be depicted as lanky misfits with ill-fitting corduroys and a subversive sense of humor.

Jain does what he can to restore the cool to his profession. He informs high schoolers that they?re far more likely to get a high-paying job right out of college if they slog through the difficult work required for a computer science degree. He?s right: Many company leaders have stepped forward to say they can?t find the computer software developers they need locally.

He speaks to students, teachers and guidance counselors about computer science occupations; he advocates at the university and in the community for expanding his own department.

He points out that the bright kids who choose law school are facing diminished job prospects at best, while the bright kids who made it through Boise State?s computer science bachelor?s program have been fielding offers from employers since a year before graduation.

Part of the problem is that the course work really is difficult, and Boise State?s computer science department is very small ? too small, even, to support a cohort of graduate student teaching assistants who can serve as tutors to struggling undergraduates. But the department, now at eight strong, will add four more professors thanks to an IGEM grant.

The business community is working on it, too. The Idaho Technology Council is going to ask its members to support an advertising campaign to attract software engineers. And the Idaho Businesses for Education, or IBE, joined in. The IBE is the recently renamed Idaho Business Coalition for Education Excellence, and it has a gold star computer science engineer on its board in Bob Lokken. As president and CEO of WhiteCloud Analytics, Lokken garners attention when he speaks about his own difficulty in hiring homegrown software engineers.

At a Boise Chamber event this month, he described that shortage, estimating there are more than 400 software developer jobs available right now in the Treasure Valley. Lokken?s theory is that many young people just aren?t willing to do the hard work required to get such a rigorous degree He also lays part of the blame on a lack of direction. Most young people, he says, just don?t know what opportunities are out there for talented students.

Both Jain and Lokken think there?s a lot businesses can do to steer students to computer careers. Internships can give young people a glimpse of a career direction that they hadn?t imagined.

Lokken thinks it would make a big difference if business leaders visited schools and talked about the interesting things computer science graduates can do.

Jain, who grew up in Delhi, always knew he wanted to go into computer science. He never much cared for machines; he was a creative thinker who loved poetry and writing. He was attracted to the abstract thinking required of computer scientists. And he thinks part of his own path was cultural. Take it from me (my mother is from India), Indian parents push their kids toward science, technology, engineering and math careers from an early age.

At Jain?s high school, he said, aiming for a computer science degree was common. At the schools he visits in the Treasure Valley, not so much. Career counselors don?t always know what careers a computer science graduate will qualify for; they don?t necessarily know that a creative person who is uninterested in mechanical engineering could find a niche in designing software.

That?s where business leaders can make a difference. If they really think computer science is a rewarding job with the promise of a good life, they need to tell all the students, teachers and education policymakers they can reach.

Democrats launch ads in ND over stalled farm bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats launched two ads in North Dakota on Tuesday criticizing Republican Senate candidate Rick Berg over the stalled farm bill as the party seeks to capitalize on rural voters' frustration with congressional inaction.

Congress left town last weekend with the five-year, nearly $500 billion farm and food bill, in limbo. The House Republican leadership declined to bring a bill to the House floor, contending that they did not have the votes to pass it. That has created a political headache for Republican candidates in states that count farming and ranching as top industries, such as North Dakota, Montana, Iowa and South Dakota.

In one of the new ads, newspaper headlines about the stalled bill and Berg's votes for the House budget that would cut $180 billion from farm programs are superimposed on water towers and the side of a red barn. North Dakota residents assail Berg and offer testimonials for his Democratic rival, Heidi Heitkamp, in the open seat race.

"We don't vote the party line, we vote for who we feel will do the best for us," Judi Hintz of Tappen, N.D., says in the commercial. "Heidi will get past the politics and get things done for North Dakota."

In a second spot, Les Franklund of Bismark, N.D., says Berg is "not thinking about my farm or my family." The ads, which are expected to air for at least a week, are part of the Democrats' $3 million-plus buy in North Dakota.

In response, the Berg campaign cited the congressman's repeated pleas to the leadership to move on the bill.

"I refuse to sit back and watch our farmers and ranchers face uncertainty while Washington plays political games," Berg said in a statement in early August when he raised the prospect of various procedural maneuvers to force a vote.

The congressman along with several of his House Republican colleagues had asked Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and other leaders to bring legislation to the floor before Congress adjourned last weekend.

The Senate passed its version of the bill in June, and the House Agriculture Committee approved a similar version in July.

But the House Republican leadership declined to act. A key factor was the food stamp program, which costs nearly $80 billion a year, or 80 percent of all the spending in the bill. House conservatives say the committee's decision to trim that budget by about 2 percent was too small, while some Democrats said any cuts to the food stamp program were unacceptable.

And while both the House and Senate take major steps to reform farm subsidy programs, some conservatives say farmers still receive too much federal aid.

North Dakota is a Republican-leaning state that is expected to go heavily for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. But Heitkamp is locked in a close race with Berg for the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad.

Farmers and ranchers also appear in a Republican ad in the Montana Senate race between incumbent Democrat Jon Tester and GOP Rep. Denny Rehberg. The National Republican Senatorial Campaign is airing a spot with rancher Turk Stovall, who expresses concern that the death of his father will mean the loss of the family ranch because of the estate tax.

The spot cites a March 23, 2007 vote that Tester cast against Sen. Jim DeMint's amendment to repeal the tax. Stovall says he can't understand Tester's vote and wonders whether the Democrat was voting with his party. One of the final images in the spot is Tester with President Barack Obama.

The federal estate tax reaches fewer than 1 percent of inheritances. The top tax rate is 35 percent but it exempts the first $5 million of an individual's estate; couples can exempt $10 million.

On the Road to Ubiquitous Encryption: Are We There Yet?

In the not too distant future, all data, whether it is data at rest or in transit on a network, sensitive or not, will be encrypted. However, the performance overhead associated with encryption and decryption is one of the few remaining roadblocks to enterprise-wide adoption of this technology. Fortunately, new approaches such as on-chip acceleration are making the ubiquitous use of encryption feasible.

In obesity, a micro-RNA causes metabolic problems

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Scientists have identified a key molecular player in a chain of events in the body that can lead to fatty liver disease, Type II diabetes and other metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity. By blocking this molecule, the researchers were able to reverse some of the pathology it caused in obese mice.

Their findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

MiR-34a (pronounced MEER-34a), a micro-RNA, occurs at higher than normal levels in the livers of obese animals and in human patients with fatty liver disease. In the new study, researchers discovered that miR-34a gums up production of a protein receptor, called beta-Klotho, needed for metabolic signaling in the liver. This hinders normal glucose uptake, glycogen and protein synthesis and other metabolic activities.

In response to signals from the small intestine, beta-Klotho contributes to normal liver function after a meal, said University of Illinois molecular and integrative physiology professor Jongsook Kim Kemper, who led the study. But in obesity, levels of miR-34a surge much higher than normal, resulting in abnormally low levels of beta-Klotho.

"The downstream effect is more glucose in the blood, more fat in the liver," she said.

The effects are dramatic. Slices of liver tissue from obese mice are laden with fat, whereas normal mice have minimal amounts of fat in their livers.

The researchers used a complementary strand of RNA (called antisense RNA) to neutralize miR-34a in obese mice. This therapeutic approach improved "metabolic outcomes, including decreased liver fat and improved glucose level in the blood," Kemper said.

The study team also included researchers from the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Mich. The National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association supported this research.

Reasons Why People Hire in Home Aged Care

In home aged care is designed to provide help to the elderly people so they can stay in their homes and out of the nursing facilities. Aged home care is one way that people can get the assistance they need without leaving the house they love.

Aged home care is the solution for people who have an elderly relative that is having difficulty living independently. The in home aged care providers can help people that are having trouble moving around their house with the necessary things we must all do each day. These professionals will come to the home of the older person and help them bathe, and help them get in and out of bed, and help them move from their bedroom to other areas of the house. They will also help them clean their living spaces, and cook their meals, and shop for their food, and be there in case of emergencies.

Aged home care nurses are often called to the home of people who have just been released from hospital. Many elderly people go into the hospital and have surgical procedures that take a long time to recover from. These include open heart surgery, broken hips, knee replacements, back surgeries, and other major operations. When they are released from the hospital the doctor will want a nurse to come visit them until they have been properly rehabilitated.

In home aged care can also be arranged for elderly patients that live with family members. Some people have medical conditions that prevent them from being able to live alone so they have to move into the homes of their relatives. As well as ensuring you use any community support that is available, employing private carers can provide the important assistance and companionship your loved one needs. They can also come and stay with the patient when the family would like to take time out.

Sitting around the clock with ill family members is very stressful. You will need to plan some time for you to take a break and relax. In home aged care allows you to have the time to be without the responsibility for a few hours and for short breaks. You and your elderly family member will benefit from you taking this time to relax, refresh, and recharge your batteries. Caring can be challenging and tiring, especially if you also have other family and job responsibilities. You must make arrangements for you to get away for you to remain in good health mentally and physically.

There is no shame in growing older and needing help to do some of the things you always could do before. There is no shame in asking for help to care for your elderly loved one.

In home aged care is provided by a variety of workers and range from highly qualified nurses to people with no professional training. Aged home care is the provision of the help to the elderly and families of the elderly so they might live full and happy lives at home.

Legalize pot vote coming up in 3 states

A catchy pro-marijuana jingle for Colorado voters considering legalizing the drug goes like this: "Jobs for our people. Money for schools. Who could ask for more?"

It's a bit more complicated than that in the three states ? Colorado, Oregon and Washington ? that could become the first to legalize marijuana this fall.

The debate over how much tax money recreational marijuana laws could produce is playing an outsize role in the campaigns for and against legalization ? and both sides concede they're not really sure what would happen.

At one extreme, pro-pot campaigners say it could prove a windfall for cash-strapped states with new taxes on pot and reduced criminal justice costs.

At the other, state government skeptics warn legalization would lead to costly legal battles and expensive new bureaucracies to regulate marijuana.

In all three states asking voters to decide whether residents can smoke pot, the proponents promise big rewards, though estimates of tax revenue vary widely:

  • Colorado's campaign touts money for school construction. Ads promote the measure with the tag line, "Strict Regulation. Fund Education." State analysts project somewhere between $5 million and $22 million a year. An economist whose study was funded by a pro-pot group projects a $60 million boost by 2017.
  • Washington's campaign promises to devote more than half of marijuana taxes to substance-abuse prevention, research, education and health care. Washington state analysts have produced the most generous estimate of how much tax revenue legal pot could produce, at nearly $2 billion over five years.
  • Oregon's measure, known as the Cannabis Tax Act, would devote 90 percent of recreational marijuana proceeds to the state's general fund. Oregon's fiscal analysts haven't even guessed at the total revenue, citing the many uncertainties inherent in a new marijuana market. They have projected prison savings between $1.4 million and $2.4 million a year if marijuana use was legal without a doctor's recommendation.

"We all know there's a market for marijuana, but right now the profits are all going to drug cartels or underground," said Brian Vicente, a lawyer working for Colorado's Campaign To Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

But there are numerous questions about the projections, and since no state has legalized marijuana for anything but medical purposes, the actual result is anyone's guess.

Among the problems: No one knows for certain how many people are buying black-market weed. No one knows how demand would change if marijuana were legal. No one knows how much prices would drop, or even what black-market pot smokers are paying now, though economists generally use a national estimate of $225 an ounce based on self-reported prices compiled online.

"It's difficult to size up a market even if it's legal, certainly if it's illegal," said Jeffrey Miron, a Harvard University economist who has studied the national tax implications of the legalization of several drugs.

In Colorado, the $60 million figure comes from Christopher Stiffler, an economist for the nonpartisan Colorado Center on Law & Policy. He looked at the state's potential marijuana market in a study funded by the pro-legalization Drug Policy Alliance. The figure comes from a combination of state and local taxes and projected savings to law enforcement.

Marijuana smokers and dealers, he argued, pay a premium now because the drug is illegal, and if government can find a way to capture that excess, tax collections should rise.

"You can basically take advantage of economies of scale, and the price of marijuana will go down and government can come in and capture the difference," Stiffler said.

The biggest unknown: Would the federal government allow marijuana markets to materialize?

When California voters considered marijuana legalization in 2010, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder warned that the federal government would not look the other way and allow a state marijuana market in defiance of federal drug law. Holder vowed a month before the election to "vigorously enforce" federal marijuana prohibition. Voters rejected the measure.

Holder hasn't been as vocal this year, but that could change. In early September, nine former heads of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration called on Holder to issue similar warnings to Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

That political uncertainty could translate into states spending thousands of dollars to defend the laws, critics say.

Related: LA voters to decide on city's ban on medical pot dispensaries

"I think it's important that this ballot lay out for the voters how much litigation is going to result from this," said Colorado assistant Attorney General Michael Dougherty, a critic of the legislation.

Legalization proponents counter that some of the 17 medical-marijuana states already collect pot taxes in violation of federal law, which does not condone medical use of the drug. Colorado collects several million dollars a year in pot-related taxes, including sales taxes, licensing fees and fees paid by patients to acquire the drug. Oregon last year doubled the cost of a medical marijuana card to raise money for things like clean water and school health programs.

"Marijuana can be regulated, can be taxed, can be sold. We're doing it now, just currently to sick people," said Vicente, the lawyer working on the Colorado legalization campaign.

Backers concede there are big questions about how marijuana would be taxed and regulated, but they are hoping to sell voters on taking the chance.

"We're like Star Trek. We're heading into a new world," said Art Way of the Drug Policy Alliance, answering tax questions recently posed by law students gathered at the University of Denver to learn about Colorado's initiative.

In the end, voters deciding the marijuana questions won't be making up their minds based on the impact on taxes, said Miron, the Harvard economist.

"It's small potatoes," Miron said of marijuana's tax implications. "I'm as firmly in the pro-legalization camp as anybody in the world, but it's because I think smoking marijuana is not the government's business."

"That is the question ? not whether it will produce revenue, but whether these drugs should be legal."

After The Videos, Mitt Romney Embarks On A Re-Reset

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

NOTABLES:

ROMNEY: I WILL BE PRESIDENT FOR THE '100 PERCENT.' Mitt Romney said three times in the opening 10 minutes of last night's Univision "Meet the Candidate" forum that his campaign is "about the 100 percent," a clear message to voters who have been swamped with sound bites and video clips that show the candidate suggesting he wasn't concerned about the nearly half of the country unlikely to vote for him, ABC's Emily Friedman and Gregory Krieg report. "My campaign is about the 100 percent of America," Romney said to the University of Miami crowd. "And I'm concerned about them. Life has become harder for Americans. I know I'm not going to get 100 percent of the vote. And my campaign will focus on the ones who will vote for me. ? I'm convinced that if we take a different course, you'll see incomes rising. I have a record, I've demonstrated my capacity to help the 100 percent." http://abcn.ws/SEeoXv

AND HE PLEDGES IMMIGRATION FIX. Univision's Jordan Fabian reports: "Romney, 65, was also pressed on the hot-button issue of immigration by Univision anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas at the BankUnited Center Field House on the University of Miami campus. The candidate emphasized that he would expand legal immigration and said that he wouldn't aggressively pursue undocumented immigrants living in the United States. 'I am not going to be going around the country and rounding them up,' he said." http://abcn.ws/QEw5XW

TUNE IN: Watch the highlights from last night's Univision forum with Mitt Romney: http://abcn.ws/Psj2JI And don't forget to tune in today when President Obama takes the stage for "El Gran Encuentro con el Presidente Barack Obama."

FROM ROMNEY H.Q.: Sen. Marco Rubio spoke up for Mitt Romney onstage at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and he's doing it again on TV airwaves, ABC's Chris Good reports. The Romney campaign is now airing an ad in Florida that stars Rubio, who speaks straight to camera about Medicare, a hotly debated issue of particular concern to seniors, of which Florida has many. In it, Rubio touts the Romney-Ryan Medicare-overhaul plan, mentioning his mother. Rubio tells viewers: "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan get it. Medicare is going broke; that's not politics, it's math." And today the Romney campaign released a new Spanish radio advertisement, titled 'Promesas' that highlights what the campaign calls "President Obama's broken promises to the Hispanic community. The ad goes on to identify Governor Romney's vision for creating jobs and getting our economy going." http://mi.tt/S63md0

COUNTDOWN TO ELECTION DAY: There are 47 days to go until Nov. 6, 2012. ABC News' battleground state rankings: http://abcn.ws/OovnMp

THE NOTE:

At the beginning of this roller-coaster week on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney's team was sending signals that the campaign was about to undergo a re-tooling of sorts.

The plan called for a multi-state advertising blitz, a series of speeches by Romney clearly laying out his economic plans, a message to voters that included more specifics about how, if elected, he would carry out his proposals, among other things. The strategy was essentially: "More Mitt."

Then, the leaked fundraising video happened, followed by the campaign's incremental response, followed by a raft of criticism among members of Romney's own party and conservatives not only unhappy with Romney's candid remarks on the hidden-camera tape but also with the direction of his campaign.

Today marks the beginning of Romney's re-reset. Again, the strategy is "More Mitt." Senior Romney advisers passed along the rough game plan for the coming weeks to ABC's Jonathan Karl: http://abcn.ws/S83GNW

-DON'T PANIC: Romney himself sets the tone for the campaign and, as one adviser told Karl, "He never gets too high; he never gets too low." Romney has seen worse: he faced near-death experiences at least twice during the primary (the South Carolina loss, the losses, on the same day, to Santorum in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado).

-THE MESSAGE: The campaign is promising a "sharper message" in its upcoming advertising blitz. The message will be economy/jobs, of course, and it will be tailored to each state, each media market. In other words, it will hammer Obama on military cuts in Virginia, coal and manufacturing in Ohio, etc.

-THE SCHEDULE: Expect Romney to have "a very intense schedule" in the coming weeks - packed with events in Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Virginia and other key states. This may seem like the obvious thing to do, but Romney lately has had a strangely light public schedule recently, with many more closed fundraisers in red states than campaign rallies in battleground states. At one recent Texas fundraiser, Karl notes, a donor told Romney, "I am happy to write a check, but why are you here? Shouldn't you be in Ohio?"

-THE DEBATES: More than anything, they are counting on a strong performance in the debates, especially the first on Oct. 3 in Denver, to pull them ahead of Obama.

The Romney campaign this morning announced a stepped-up pace in the battleground states. Next week, we'll see Romney and running mate Paul Ryan back on the hustings. This time the duo will take part in a three-day "Romney Plan for a Stronger Middle Class" bus tour across Ohio. Ryan is set to campaign in Lima and Cincinnati while Romney will travel to Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo.

POLLING NOTE: ABC News Pollster Gary Langer notes that in the most recent ABC News-Washington Post poll, registered voters by two-to-one margin said Romney had not provided enough details on the policies he'd pursue as president - 31 percent (enough) to 63 percent (not enough). That division was much closer on whether Obama has done enough to detail what he'd do in a second term, 46 percent (enough) to compared to 49 percent (not enough).

JONATHAN KARL'S ANALYSIS OF THE ROMNEY CAMPAIGN'S NEW STRATEGY. WATCH: http://abcn.ws/OecJfX

TODAY'S MESSAGE FROM OBAMA H.Q.: From an Obama campaign official: "During a week that was supposed to be a messaging reset for the Romney campaign, Mitt Romney showed once again that he just doesn't get it on issues important to veterans and military families. Tomorrow, OFA will hold a conference call with reporters to run through Romney's terrible week on veterans' issues."

NOTE IT!

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Why have Paul Ryan on your ticket if you're not prepared to make this a Paul Ryan moment? Among the many discordant things about Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comment is that it's impossible to imagine it coming out of Ryan's mouth - it's just not what animates his conservatism. So why not turn to Ryan to put that behind him? Romney is starting to build back his economic message, saying last night that the campaign is "about the 100 percent." That's a sentiment Ryan would agree with. So maybe the answer isn't more Mitt, so much as it's more Paul.

NOTE EXCLUSIVE: SEIU ADS HIT ROMNEY, GOP CANDIDATES ON MEDICARE. ABC's Chris Good reports, the Service Employees International Union is airing a new radio ad in Florida, hitting Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan on Medicare reform. In it, a nervous-sounding mother calls her son asking about Medicare and the GOP ticket, confused by TV ads on the topic. "Well the Romney Ryan plan does essentially end Medicare, that's what the Wall Street Journal said," her son explains. "What I read said seniors would wind up paying over $6,000 dollars more per year." (That figure pertains to Ryan's 2011 Medicare proposal, which he has since revised.) "I don't like the sound of that," the mother says. SEIU will also air two new TV ads attacking freshman House Republicans. One questions Rep. Dan Benishek's ethics as a doctor for his vote in favor of the Ryan budget; the other attacks Rep. Scott Rigell. Noted: the ads recycle a claim that Romney/Ryan would hike seniors' health-care costs by $6,400-a figure that applied to Ryan's 2011 plan, not the revised 2012 version. See and hear the ads here: http://abcn.ws/T7GAZg

YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: THE NEW AMERICA. ABC News announced the launch of an on-going series of reports, "Your Voice, Your Vote: The New America," to examine how the Hispanic vote will impact the whole political picture in November and beyond. The influence of the booming U.S. Hispanic population is challenging the conventional political wisdom in new and unexpected ways that have both Democrats and Republicans taking notice. The first reports began airing last night in conjunction with Univision's "Meet the Candidate" forums. ABC's Diane Sawyer spoke with Univision's Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, moderators of the two forums. "World News" weekend anchor David Muir reported last night and this morning from Florida and watch for ABC News senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper's report tonight. BACKGROUND: In May ABC News and Univision News announced a joint venture that will launch a 24/7 news, information and lifestyle network primarily in English to serve the youngest and fastest-growing demographic in the country: U.S. Hispanics.

MEET THE PERSUADABLES: ABC News pollster Gary Langer reports that slightly more than a fifth of registered voters remain persuadable in their preferences for president, little changed from before the party conventions - and a continued sign that the 2012 election retains the potential to break open in either candidate's direction. Twenty-two percent of registered voters fit the definition of persuadable - those who express anxiety about the candidate they support and are seeking more information about their choices. That includes essentially equal numbers of Barack Obama's and Mitt Romney's supporters. The number of "persuadables" in last week's ABC News/Washington Post poll is similar to its level before the nominating conventions, 25 percent. http://abcn.ws/Oe1WT8

THE BUZZ:

with ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield ( @LizHartfield)

PAWLENTY LEAVING ROMNEY ROLE FOR K STREET. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will step down from his position as co-chair of Romney's campaign after being named the CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable. "I'm excited about this new challenge," Pawlenty said in the official press release. "Few industries have more impact on the entire economy - and on the lives of average Americans - than financial services. I realize there is still work to be done to continue to earn customers' confidence. Our members will best accomplish that goal by responsibly investing every day in our communities and job creators. I look forward to working closely with decision makers from both parties on issues related to our nation's banks, insurance companies and investment firms so that they can continue to provide fuel for America's economic engine." Pawlenty's new job will begin November 1st, 2012 and he will take over from long-time CEO Steve Bartlett, who is retiring.

READY, SET, VOTE! EARLY VOTING BEGINS. The general election isn't 47 days away-it's happening now, reports ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield. On November 6 polls will open across the country and millions of voters will head out to cast their vote. But those voters won't be the sole contingent of Americans who decide the outcome of the general election. Rather, they'll be joined by another group, a smaller yet very sizable percentage for whom voting day might be a faint memory: the early voters. http://abcn.ws/P2geSy

BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA TO APPEAR ON THE VIEW. ABC's Devin Dwyer reports, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will appear on ABC's "The View" Tuesday for their first joint interview on the daytime TV talk circuit, the show's producers announced today. The first couple will together take questions on their relationship, family life inside the White House and the 2012 presidential race from the program's five female hosts, the network said in a statement. The interview is scheduled to tape Monday, Sept. 24, in New York City. The Obamas have each appeared individually on "The View." http://abcn.ws/PWODFl

ROMNEY USES HIS MEXICAN BORN DAD'S WELFARE STORY AT JUNTOS CON ROMNEY RALLY. ABC's Emily Friedman reports, Mitt Romney called the Republican Party the "natural home" for Hispanic voters, saying, in his first campaign rally in nearly five days, that America is a place that helps those struggling get back on their feet but won't make government dependency a "permanent lifestyle." Speaking through various interruptions, one protestor, getting no further than screaming "The 47 percent!," a reference to those leaked videos, Romney tried to paint a picture of a presidency that would do the best job of pulling Hispanics out of poverty. To do that, Romney used the story of his own Mexican-born father as an example of someone who received government assistance but then made it on his own. http://abcn.ws/S8tQA8

MATT DOWD'S ANALYSIS: IN PRESIDENTIAL DECATHLON, OBAMA IS WINNING. ABC political analyst Matt Dowd notes, Presidential campaigns aren't decided on the last day of a race. They are decided in all the days and moments leading up to Election Day. They turn toward the candidate who puts together a lead going into the final voting in November, and who won or lost the important moments along the way. In that way, this race in its final months is like a decathlon. Instead of individual sporting events, it is the combination of 10 moments that determines which candidate has the most points on Nov. 6. Thus far, I would suggest there are have been five moments of significance. President Obama has either won or tied in each of these, allowing him to build up a small but significant lead. http://abcn.ws/PIn7Yy

RUBIO CALLS ROMNEY'S I-WISH-I-WERE-LATINO COMMENT 'A JOKE.' ABC's Michael Falcone reports: In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called Mitt Romney's I-wish-I-were-Latino comment, which came to light in a leaked video tape this week, a "joke." "I think he meant it as a joke," Rubio said on a conference call organized by the Republican National Committee, adding that's "how most reasonable people would take it." Romney was shown on a hidden-camera video clip posted by Mother Jones magazine telling his audience at a May 17 fundraiser in Florida about his father's background. http://abcn.ws/PUG3Xu

SCOTT BROWN AND ELIZABETH WARREN SQUARE OFF IN FIRST DEBATE TONIGHT. ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield reports, Tonight Massachusetts voters get their first chance to watch Senate candidates Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown go head-to-head in a televised debate. The debate, which is hosted by WBZ-TV's Jon Keller, is the first in a series of four that will take throughout the next month across the state. And in a race that has stayed as consistently close as this one, these debates offer both candidates a chance to break through and gain a solid lead in the polls. http://abcn.ws/Usewh2

BUDGET DEAL IS GOAL OF SENATORS GUIDED BY BOWLES-SIMPSON. Bloomberg's Heidi Pryzbyla reports: "A group of U.S. senators is quietly attempting to do something almost unthinkable in Washington: craft a bipartisan solution to the nation's growing deficit in an election year. The group - which includes Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, and Michael Bennet, a Colorado Democrat - hasn't been given a name like the "Gang of Six," and members might fail like others before them. That hasn't stopped them from joining forces when most lawmakers are focused on campaigning. They are looking at reviving a proposal by the leaders of President Barack Obama failed 2010 deficit-cutting commission to require Congress to act on a long-term plan, said Democratic Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota. The lawmakers want to offer a proposal during the lame-duck session of Congress after the Nov. 6 election." bloom.bg/QDe24i

ELECTORAL FOCUS: ALL THE SINGLE LADIES. The Daily's Daniel Libit reports: "As both campaigns scour for new voters - especially in increasingly crucial Florida - a growing group of experts and a recent Gallup survey suggest that the obsession over single-female voters should shift to the widows and divorcees of the over-65 bracket. President Obama has been, in political terms, a single-lady killer: the latest Fox News poll of likely voters has Obama leading Romney by 38 points. According to exit polls, he won the group by 44 points in 2008. But an exit poll study by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner found that Obama's 2008 support among single seniors women shrunk to 19 points - the narrowest margin of any other subgroup as it relates to marriage status. By the time women reach their Medicare-recipient age, experts said, their living arrangement is almost incidental to their voting profile. Indeed, the Obama campaign confirmed recently that it is not making any specific targeting efforts related to single seniors - even though it has made great strides to connect to the younger constituency. http://bit.ly/SCLlUi

STRUGGLING YOUNG ADULTS POSE CHALLENGE FOR CAMPAIGNS. The New York Times' Susan Saulny reports: "Millions of struggling working-class young adults, many in battleground states like Florida, Colorado and Wisconsin, are up for grabs in this election, making up what experts call one of the most potentially powerful but often overlooked voting blocs. Voter turnout efforts tend to focus on university campuses and young professionals who have time and money to spend on campaigns. But in several tossup states this year, legions of eligible voters are young, jobless or underemployed, and lacking in formal education beyond high school. Undecided between the presidential candidates, and often discouraged, they are offering openings for both parties to make gains, experts say. http://nyti.ms/RxH4qC

TO CLAIM VIRGINIA, OBAMA'S HOPES REST ON WOMEN. The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty and Scott Clement report: "A new Washington Post survey indicates that President Obama holds a 19-percentage-point lead (58 to 39 percent) among female likely voters in the commonwealth yet is running six points behind Republican nominee Mitt Romney among men who are likely to vote (50 to 44 percent). That support from women is the reason the president now holds an eight-point advantage overall in Virginia. There has long been a disparity between women and men in their voting patterns - a phenomenon first identified and named the "gender gap" during Ronald Reagan's presidency. This year, however, ginning up female support has become an imperative for Obama in his reelection bid." http://wapo.st/T66gpf

Myanmar's Suu Kyi to meet Obama

(AP) ? Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi meets Wednesday with President Barack Obama and will be presented with Congress' highest award, signs of Washington's deep admiration for one of the world's most famous political dissidents.

But the Obama administration was careful to balance the praise for the Nobel laureate with recognition for the reformist former military leader she is working with as the country also known as Burma embarks on democratic change. Treasury announced it was taking President Thein Sein and a top aide off its list of sanctioned individuals.

Suu Kyi is on a 17-day trip to the U.S. She spent 15 years under house arrest for opposing military rule. Obama will meet privately with Suu Kyi at the White House.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama was looking forward very much to the visit, "as it provides another opportunity to reaffirm our long-standing support for her struggle and the struggle of many others toward democratic, just and transparent governance in Burma."

A senior administration official, who requested anonymity in order to discuss the protocol surrounding the meeting, said there would be no news coverage because Suu Kyi is not a head of state. That also likely reflects concerns that her Washington visit could overshadow Thein Sein, who attends the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly in New York next week.

Thein Sein is a member of Myanmar's former ruling junta who has led the political opening over the past two years that was heralded by Suu Kyi's release in late 2010. Suu Kyi has since been elected to parliament.

As a result, the U.S. normalized diplomatic relations with Myanmar and in July allowed U.S. companies to start investing there again. The administration is now considering easing the main plank of its remaining sanctions, a ban on imports.

Suu Kyi voiced support for that step after she met Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday, saying Myanmar should not depend on the U.S. to keep up its momentum for democracy. Some of her supporters, however, oppose it, saying reforms have not taken root and Washington will lose leverage with Myanmar, which still faces serious human rights issues. Clinton also expressed concern Tuesday that Myanmar retains some military contacts with North Korea.

The U.S. still maintains a list of sanctioned individuals and entities barred from doing business and owning property in the U.S. They are principally military figures, and people implicated in human rights abuses and drug trafficking.

Thura Shwe Mann, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, was also taken off the list Wednesday. He was the third-ranking member of the former ruling junta.

The ceremonial highlight of Suu Kyi's visit was to be Wednesday's presentation in the Capitol Rotunda of the Congressional Gold Medal that she was awarded in absentia in 2008 when she was still under house arrest. She will also meet with Senate and House leaders. Clinton and former first lady Laura Bush will attend the medal ceremony.

"This is a truly special day here at the Capitol," Mitch McConnell, minority Republican leader, said on the Senate floor ahead of the ceremony. "It's been a long time coming. We are honored to have this hero with us and delighted to award her our nation's highest civilian honor."

Suu Kyi's cause is one that Democrats and Republicans in an increasingly divided Washington have united in championing over the years, and several lawmakers who have advocated sanctions have visited Myanmar over the past year to consult with her on the shift in U.S. policy.

Despite bitter political divisions, both parties in Congress have broadly supported the administration's steps to reward Myanmar for its shift from military rule. Congress in August renewed the import ban, but Obama could seek to waive its provisions.

Collaboration: Building a Solid Team | Merit Resources Blog

Team building in your workplace can help to establish goals, unite teams and open communication lines. This can create more collaborative and successful working relationships between all employees, customers and clients. Businesses that choose to focus on team building have more productive employees and higher performing employees. Although team building can seem like a daunting task, there are simple steps you can implement into your daily routines that will produce notable changes in your office. Team building can take on different forms depending on the size and operation of your business, but in the simplest terms, team building follows these key steps:

Communicate team goals: A team is a group of people formed to achieve a common goal, so the goal needs to be defined in order to have a team work around the goal. If the company goals are not clear, then your employees won?t know what they are. Leaders of the team should define these goals and the goals of each team member.

Goal commitment: Each member of the team must be committed to not only achieving the goals, but also to each other. Part of a team?s success comes in knowing that everyone has common goals that they are working toward together. As a manager/leader, you should encourage open communication and relationship building in order for employees to get to know one another better and understand everyone?s role in the group.

Give responsibility: Every member has a different role that contributes to the team, so allow each member to take responsibility for his or her portion of that success. If you do not allow your employees to have responsibility and autonomy within the group in order to play his or her role, the member, and therefore the team, will not be successful.

Form a strategy: Once you have identified your goals and the way in which you will achieve them, you need to create a strategy that incorporates each team member?s role.

Follow up: Clearly define a timeline for your team meetings. During these meetings, which can be group or individual sessions, you should discuss what is and is not working. Constructive criticism can be helpful as long as you help your employees to problem solve solutions.

Review: Once a project has been completed, sit down with your team to review. You can cover the project from beginning to end to see what was done well and what could be improved.

Remember to always make yourself available to your employees. This tactic improves communication within your organization and helps your employees understand that you are open to their ideas and suggestions.

Valentine tries to explain 'weakest roster' remark

TORONTO (AP) ? Bobby Valentine insisted he wasn't trying to be critical when he said his struggling Red Sox had "the weakest roster we've ever had in September in the history of baseball."

Two days after his latest inflammatory remark, Valentine tried to explain himself before Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays, offering an unsolicited clarification at the end of his morning media session.

"The other day when I made a comment about our September roster, that wasn't meant to be a criticism of any players or anything in the organization," Valentine said. "It's a statement of fact because of the injuries and our Triple-A team in the playoffs."

Before Friday's game, Valentine was asked what part of his team would benefit most from some extra call-ups. On Sunday, however, he seemed eager to add some context to his controversial response.

If you'll recall, AT&T was quick to inform users after WWDC that it would not be supporting FaceTime over Cellular on all of its data plans (you'll need a Mobile Share plan for it to work) when it launches as part of iOS6 on the 19th. Now Verizon has responded, confirming in its iPhone 5 press release that the feature is welcome on any data plan allowance.
