Team building in your workplace can help to establish goals, unite teams and open communication lines. This can create more collaborative and successful working relationships between all employees, customers and clients. Businesses that choose to focus on team building have more productive employees and higher performing employees. Although team building can seem like a daunting task, there are simple steps you can implement into your daily routines that will produce notable changes in your office. Team building can take on different forms depending on the size and operation of your business, but in the simplest terms, team building follows these key steps:
Communicate team goals: A team is a group of people formed to achieve a common goal, so the goal needs to be defined in order to have a team work around the goal. If the company goals are not clear, then your employees won?t know what they are. Leaders of the team should define these goals and the goals of each team member.
Goal commitment: Each member of the team must be committed to not only achieving the goals, but also to each other. Part of a team?s success comes in knowing that everyone has common goals that they are working toward together. As a manager/leader, you should encourage open communication and relationship building in order for employees to get to know one another better and understand everyone?s role in the group.
Give responsibility: Every member has a different role that contributes to the team, so allow each member to take responsibility for his or her portion of that success. If you do not allow your employees to have responsibility and autonomy within the group in order to play his or her role, the member, and therefore the team, will not be successful.
Form a strategy: Once you have identified your goals and the way in which you will achieve them, you need to create a strategy that incorporates each team member?s role.
Follow up: Clearly define a timeline for your team meetings. During these meetings, which can be group or individual sessions, you should discuss what is and is not working. Constructive criticism can be helpful as long as you help your employees to problem solve solutions.
Review: Once a project has been completed, sit down with your team to review. You can cover the project from beginning to end to see what was done well and what could be improved.
Remember to always make yourself available to your employees. This tactic improves communication within your organization and helps your employees understand that you are open to their ideas and suggestions.
