Bombs tear through Iraqi capital, killing over 60

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A coordinated wave of car bombings tore through mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 66 people and maiming nearly 200 as insurgents step up the bloodshed roiling Iraq.

The attacks in markets and other areas frequented by civilians are the latest sign of a rapid deterioration in security as sectarian tensions are exacerbated by anti-government protests and the war in neighboring Syria grinds on.

More than 450 people have been killed across Iraq in May. Most of the killings came over the past two weeks in the most sustained wave of violence since U.S. troops left in December 2011.

The surge in attacks is reminiscent of the sectarian carnage that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. April was Iraq's deadliest month since June 2008, according to a United Nations tally that put last month's death toll at more than 700.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's bombings, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida's Iraqi arm. The group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, frequently uses car bombs and coordinated blasts against Shiites to undermine Iraqis' confidence in the Shiite-led government.

The day's deadliest attack happened when two bombs exploded in the eastern Habibiya area on the edge of the sprawling Shiite district of Sadr City. Those blasts killed 12 and wounded 35, police said.

Twin blasts also struck an open-air market in the predominantly Shiite al-Maalif area, killing six and wounding 12.

Another car bomb exploded in the busy commercial Sadoun Street in downtown Baghdad. It killed five civilians and wounded 14, police said. Among the wounded were four policemen who were at a nearby checkpoint.

The central street is one of the capital's main commercial areas and is lined with clinics, pharmacies and shops. Firefighters were seen struggling to extinguish flames as police sealed off the area. Several shops were partially damaged or burned.

"What crime have those innocent people committed?" asked witness Zein al-Abidin. "Who is responsible for these massacres?"

Elsewhere across the bloodied capital city, police reported:

? A car bomb went off in the eastern New Baghdad area as officers were waiting for explosives experts to dismantle it. A civilian was killed and nine others wounded.

? In the north, a blast in the Sabi al-Boor neighborhood killed eight civilians and wounded 26. In the Kazimiyah district, a car bomb blew up near a bus and taxi stop, killing four and wounding 11.

Another blast killed four and wounded nine in the Shaab area. And an attack in the Hurriyah neighborhood left five dead and 14 wounded.

? A bomb in the southwestern neighborhood of Bayaa killed six civilians and wounded 16.

? In Baghdad's central Sadria area, a car bomb killed three civilians and wounded 11.

? In the east, a blast killed five and wounded 12 in the Jisr Diyala area. Car bombs also struck the Baladiyat neighborhood, killing four and wounding 11.

? And in Madain, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of central Baghdad, a car bomb killed three and wounded nine.

Medical officials confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information.

The day's bloodshed was the deadliest since last Monday, when a wave of attacks killed 113 people in Shiite and Sunni areas. That was the deadliest single day in Iraq since July 23, when attacks aimed largely at security forces killed 115.

The U.S. Embassy issued a statement condemning the latest attacks.

Although violence has decreased sharply since the height of the insurgency that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, militants are still capable of carrying out lethal attacks nationwide. The recent wave of attacks has raised tensions between the country's Sunni minority and Shiite-led government.

Since late December, members of Iraq's Sunni community have been protesting against the government. They cite a range of grievances, including poor services, discrimination and the application of tough anti-terrorism policies they believe unfairly target their sect.

The unrest is fueling long-simmering sectarian rifts in the country that only grew more divisive after an April 23 crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp. The crackdown in the town of Hawija left many protesters dead.

Maria Fantappie, an Iraq analyst at the International Crisis Group, linked the uptick in violence to the protests and said the events at Hawija marked a turning point.

"They transformed the political crisis into a series of local conflicts in the Sunni-populated provinces," she said. "As it stands, the risk is a metastasis of armed clashes across these provinces."

She said outright civil war between the protesters ? who remain divided over their support for violence ? and security forces loyal to the Shiite-led government is unlikely, however.

Alarmed by a nationwide deterioration in the security situation, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki recently ordered a reshuffle in senior military ranks.

Authorities have also launched a military operation in the country's western Anbar province to chase down fighters from al-Qaida in Iraq.

The group is growing stronger as a result of rising lawlessness on the Syrian-Iraq frontier and cross-border cooperation with the Syrian militant group Jabhat al-Nusra, or the Nusra Front, a rebel faction fighting to oust President Bashar Assad.

Call on Sally Draper for more 'Mad Men' truth

TV

Sally Draper finally said to her dad, Don, what all of us have been thinking for six seasons of "Mad Men." It came at the tail end of last Sunday's episode -- an episode already jammed with noteworthy scenes and dialogue.

After being left alone with her two little brothers in Don and Megan's apartment, Sally confronts a burglar during the night. The older black woman convinces Sally that she is her "grandmother," that she raised Don and that he invited her to his home. Sally is skeptical, but the lady still gets away with robbing the place.

"She said she knew you," Sally says to her father on the phone a day later. "I asked her everything I know and she had an answer for everything. Then I realized I don?t know anything about you."

Welcome to the club, Sally. No one on the show really knows anything about Don. But what we do know is that Sally Draper's transition into her teen years is a welcome step for the character played by Kiernan Shipka.

Half the time we can't even remember the names of Sally's two brothers or whether they are the same kids every week, but Sally is a mainstay, and how she copes with her fractured family going forward could prove interesting.

Image: "Mad Men" intruder

Another phone call gone wrong: "Grandma Ida" calls off the police after Sally and Bobby Draper find her in their dad's apartment.

Will Sally become a hippie flower child of the 1970s, protesting the remaining years of the Vietnam War? Is there any hope that she can have any kind of meaningful relationship with her mother, Betty? Will she dig deeper into her father's secrets, and if so, how will Don react?

The phone call at the end of the May 19 episode was a great juxtaposition to the call Don took at the start of the episode from his latest mistress, Sylvia. That call ended with Don whipping his phone into the office cocktail cart. The call from Sally ended with Don stunned silent by his daughter.

"We really wanted to show that Sally Draper doesn't know anything about her father," show creator Matthew Weiner says in a behind-the-scenes video from AMC. "These children are not being parented at all. That phone call at the end was really supposed to codify the episode as this big mystery being answered, but not being answered at all."

For now, let's hope Sally keeps talking. Soon or later it won't render Don speechless -- or at least semi-mute as he's been all season -- and fans of "Mad Men" could be witness to a meaningful dialogue.

Israeli official says Syria cyberattack foiled

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli security expert says Syrian hackers tried to break into the computers of the water system of the city of Haifa.

Speaking at a lecture on Saturday in the southern city of Beersheba, Yitzhak Ben Yisrael, Israel's former cyber security adviser, said that a group calling itself "The Syrian Electronic Army" had launched the failed attack two weeks ago.

In April, an assault in the name of the hacking group Anonymous mostly failed.

The attack took place just after Israel bombed a military complex near Damascus. Israel refuses to comment on the strike but officials at the time said Iranian missiles set for Hezbollah were hit. Syria has said that it would keep all options on the table for its response.

Is The FBI Dumb, Evil, Or Just Incompetent?

Sledgehammer-dvdYour government is worried. The world is "going dark." Once upon a time, telephones were the only way to talk to someone far away, and the authorities could wiretap any phone they wanted. Nowadays, though, suspects might be communicating via Facebook, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Skype, Viber. And so, inevitably: ?Today, if you?re a tech company that?s created a new and popular way to communicate, it?s only a matter of time before the FBI shows up with a court order to read or hear some conversation.? But some of those providers have no interest in spying on their users. The FBI is not amused. "A government task force is preparing legislation that would pressure companies such as Face?book and Google to enable law enforcement officials to intercept online communications as they occur," according to the Washington Post, by fining them increasing sums until they build government-accessible back doors into their systems. Which invites the titular question of this post.

Interpol rejects Russia bid to locate UK investor

PARIS (AP) -- The international police agency Interpol has rejected a Russian push to locate and arrest a Britain-based investor who is a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin's regime.

France-based Interpol said in a statement Friday it has "deleted all information in relation to William Browder."

A special Interpol-related committee decided at a meeting Friday that "the case was of a predominantly political nature" and therefore Interpol shouldn't be involved in helping Russia pursue Browder.

Browder, of Hermitage Capital investment fund, welcomed the decision.

Hermitage lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was investigating corruption before being arrested. He later died in police custody.

Browder successfully pushed for U.S. sanctions against Russians involved in the Magnitsky case. Russia accuses Browder of tax violations.

What to Look For in a Web Host - 'Net Features - Website Magazine

:: By Kelly Meeneghan, 1&1 Internet, Inc. ::

Creating a website for your business is a strong first step to gaining success online. However, a key factor to consider in your business strategy lies behind the face of the website and focuses on the support behind your online presence. No longer considered a simple online business card or added bonus, a reliable and professional website is a necessity if businesses want to succeed. Therefore, making the selection process for the perfect Web host for your needs is all the more important.

Web hosts can range from the small local providers to international giants, all varying in services, products and prices. As a Web professional, it is essential to choose a host that will work best for your project, budget and needs. While it may seem more comforting to remain with the host you already are working with, you might be missing chances to take your website to the next level. As the industry evolves, so do the standards and opportunities on the Internet. Below are five tips to keep in mind when deciding which Web host will work best for your needs.

1. Customer Service

Whether you are still learning about the hosting world or are a season veteran, customer service is always a priority. It is important to look at the avenues of communication that the Web host offers. Be sure to notice the hours the help team is available via phone and their engagement and response rate on social media. It is most beneficial to have the ability to access well-educated IT experts around the clock. With the ever changing environment of the IT industry, this knowledgeable team will be able to guide you throughout the process with ease.

2. Redundancy

An error code on a website can be damaging for any online business. Downtime rate and prevention strategies should be looked at seriously when comparing Web hosts. In cases of necessary maintenance or unexpected failure, the downtime to a professional website can deter consumers away from the business. Redundancy, or dual hosting, is an ideal solution that allows your information to be stored on two servers, in two different geographically located data centers. Therefore, on the off chance that something would directly affect one data center, your site and hosted data is automatically switched to its ?sister server,? ensuring that your website is constantly operating and is accessible.

3. Scalability

While traditional hosting may be the best option for some, others may require the backend support of a server. As your business grows, so will your online needs, but your payments do not always have to. Flexible cloud solutions are ideal for many businesses that possess characteristics like expectation of growth, seasonal surges, need for accessibility, changes in demand or improved management of IT costs. The concept puts you in the driver?s seat and allows you to scale your resources as needed, even on an hourly basis. For example, if you are a seasonal retailer, you can select to have more RAM and hard disk space configured for your busy months, like the holiday season, then scale back in your off months. Flexible hosting gives the opportunity to utilize optimal resources when needed, without having to pay for it year round.

4. Security and Back-Up

Many businesses, especially smaller ones, do not have the luxury of starting over again. Long hours are dedicated to making sure that the hard work and dedication put into the business strategy will help it succeed. Simple mistakes in the website creation process could be detrimental to a business. For example, forgetting to close a parenthesis while coding can help facilitate malicious activity from hackers. Security options like SiteLock features can help prevent against such situations with routine scans for vulnerabilities and steps to improve. Additionally, Web professionals often need to experiment with resources for different projects. With back-up or ?snapshot? features available through Web hosts, cloud server users can save server configurations and reinstate it at their own convenience. Different back-up features allow you the freedom to make changes and explore staging options without the fear of losing any work or having to start from scratch.

5. Price

When comparing side-by-side Web hosts, be sure that all necessities are met. While some providers offer expensive options and others are more affordable, there is no universal option. The Web hosting industry has traveled leaps and bounds to stay ahead of the latest trends and consumer needs. Your needs may start with simple hosting, but as it grows, so will the need to expand the infrastructure through more complex solutions such as dedicated servers, cloud servers or increased security and advancement. The best option is one that fits your needs but refrains from being distracted by extra bells and whistles if they are not essential for your business plan.

The Web host selection process is an inevitable process for a majority all professionals, from small business owners to website developers. It is important to be confident in the Web host chosen and know that your hosting solution that will work best for the needs of your business while incorporating budget, services and projected growth.

DNA damage: The dark side of respiration

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Adventitious changes in cellular DNA can endanger the whole organism, as they may lead to life-threatening illnesses like cancer. Researchers at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich now report how byproducts of respiration cause mispairing of subunits in the double helix.

The DNA in our cells controls the form and function of every cell type in our bodies. The instructions for this are encoded in the linear sequence of the four subunits found in DNA, the bases adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). Random changes in the sequence can lead to cell dysfunction, and may result in unrestricted cell proliferation and malignancies. Mutations can be induced by a variety of agents. For example, cellular respiration, i.e. the reduction of inspired oxygen to water, which powers cell function, also generates highly reactive oxygen species that can damage DNA, with the purine bases G and A being particularly susceptible to this kind of attack.

"Reactive oxygen species are responsible for two different sorts of DNA damage, as they induce formation of both 8-oxo-G and FaPy-G," says Professor Thomas Carell of the Department of Chemistry at LMU. In 2004, work done by Carell and his team defined how 8-oxo-G generates mutations. However, the basis for the mutagenic effect of FaPy-G has remained obscure ? until now. In their latest publication, Carell and his colleagues describe how FaPY-G leads to mispairing of bases in the double helix.

Pernicious partner swapping

One G in one strand of the double helix normally matches up with a C on the other, forming a G:C pair. But as a consequence of damage by reactive oxygen species, the guanine base may be transformed into FaPy-G, so that we get a FaPy-G:C base pair. "We have now shown that, in the course of DNA replication prior to cell division, FaPy-G interacts with adenine, leading to the formation of FaPy-G:A base pairs. This partner swap is unusual, since unmodified guanine normally does not team up with adenine," Carell notes.

FaPy-G is subsequently recognized as abnormal and is removed by DNA repair enzymes. The missing base is replaced by a T ? which is the usual partner for A. The net result is that the original G:C base pair has been converted into an A:T pair, and the base sequence has undergone a potentially dangerous mutation.

This outcome is made possible by the fact that the cell's damage-control systems find it surprisingly difficult to distinguish the normal guanine base from its aberrant derivative FaPy-G during DNA replication. "That this defect then leads to mispairing with adenine is one of the main reasons for the spontaneous development of tumors," says Carell. "So with every breath we take, our risk of getting cancer goes up by a teeny-weeny bit." Further insights into the reasons why FaPy-G often eludes the cell's detection and correction systems could help to improve the treatment of cancer, as the inhibition of DNA repair processes in tumor cells increases their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs.

New Service Called Deeplink.me Will Let Mobile Users Navigate Through A ?Web? Of Apps

dl-4Have you ever wished that you could navigate through the apps on the phone as easy as clicking links on the web? Such a thing may now become a real possibility thanks to a new service from Cellogic, called Deeplink.me. In a nutshell, it’s a bit.ly for mobile app deep linking – meaning not necessarily just linking to the app itself, but to a specific page, section or ?- in the case of a mobile game – a specific level, within an application. The link (deeplink.me/yourname), meanwhile, works from anywhere, whether web, mobile web, or any other native mobile application. It can automatically detect where an end user is coming from and whether or not they have the necessary mobile app installed on their device. If the link is clicked on the web, it would simply point the user to the developer or publisher’s web version of that same content. If on mobile with no app installed, it could be configured to point to the app store or mobile website instead. And if the app is present, it could take you right to the relevant screen. All of this is configurable, of course. The idea came about as an offshoot of what Celllogic is currently building with Nextap, a content discovery network for mobile applications. Nextap is a much bigger product built on top of this deeplink technology,?and, even pre-launch, it has paying customers. These include several large news publishers and a few big-name app and game developers. During the development process for Nextap, the team decided to spin off the?Deeplink tool, which will allow?end users to move horizontally through apps. As Cellogic CEO Itamar Weisbrod explains, Nextap’s customers wanted to use the technology as something of a “bit.ly for deep linking” so they could tweet out links, share them on Facebook, email and elsewhere. “One of their biggest issues is that they’ve invested so much in these native apps, but they’re still silos,” says Weisbrod. “So we said, well, we have the analytics, we have this platform, we could just give you this one URL and you can generate the links for your apps, and you could then link to specific parts in your apps.” The implementation requires minimal configuration on the app developer’s side since the function the link is calling is already present. Developers only have to add a few lines of code, Weisbrod says. And on

Urban renewal? Big U.S. cities showing strong growth

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Urban renewal? New census estimates show that most of the nation's largest cities further enhanced their allure last year, posting strong population growth for a second straight year.

Big cities surpassed the rate of growth of their surrounding suburbs at an even faster clip, a sign of America's continuing preference for urban living after the economic downturn quelled enthusiasm for less-crowded expanses.

Farther-out suburbs known as exurbs saw their growth slip to 0.35 percent, the lowest in more than a decade.

Economists generally had played down the recent city boom as an aberration, predicting that young adults in the recovering economy would soon be back on the move after years of staying put in big cities. But the widening gains for cities in 2012 indicate that young people ? as well as would-be retirees seeking quieter locales ? are playing it safe for a while longer in dense urban cores, where jobs may be easier to find and keep.

Prior to 2011, suburbs had consistently outpaced big cities since 1920, with the rise of the automobile.

The new census estimates are a snapshot of population growth as of July 2012. The Associated Press sought additional analysis from William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, and Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire.

Cities with booming regional economies continue to see the biggest gains ? from Seattle and San Francisco to Austin, Texas, Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, D.C., locales seeing a burst of new apartment construction.

"Cities have become more appealing to young people, with more things to do and places to see," said Mark Obrinsky, chief economist at the National Multi Housing Council, a Washington-based trade group. "Many of the cities are committing themselves to regrowth and development, and in newer cities like Dallas we're beginning to see new restaurants, bars and apartments in the downtown areas that put it a bit closer to being a 24-hour city."

He noted that the division between city and suburbs is blurring, too. There's no longer a clear line between an economic center where people work and suburban bedroom communities. Both can be home to major companies and residences.

Census data show that many closer-in suburbs linked to a city with public transit or well-developed roadways are benefiting from strong city growth, while far-flung areas near the metropolitan edge are fizzling after heady growth during the mid-decade housing boom.

Suburbs in the South and West also are seeing some gains, such as those around Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Jacksonville, Fla.

New Orleans, which saw its population shrivel in the mid-2000s after Hurricane Katrina, continued to post the biggest increase in city growth relative to suburbs in the past year ? 2.5 percent vs. 0.6 percent. Atlanta, Richmond, Va., Denver, Boston and Charlotte, N.C., also showed wide disparities between city and suburbs.

Other big cities showing faster growth compared with the previous year include Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Francisco and Columbus, Ohio.

In all, primary cities in large metropolitan areas with populations of more than 1 million grew by 1.12 percent last year, compared with 0.97 percent in surrounding suburbs. In 2011, the gap between city and suburb growth was narrower ? 1.03 percent vs. 0.96 percent.

During the mid-decade housing boom, city growth had come to a standstill, while exurban growth rose by 2 percent, as the wide availability of low-interest mortgages pushed new residential development outward.

"The country has been exposed to a very difficult five years, and many people are reluctant to take chances," said Johnson, the University of New Hampshire demographer. "Marriages are still down, births are still down. Economists may say that the recession is over, but the recovery has not yet been fully reflected in demographic trends."

Other findings:

?New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Boston each grew faster between 2010 and 2012 than they did annually between 2000 and 2010.

?Texas continued to be the big population winner, accounting for eight of the 15 fastest-growing cities with populations of 50,000 or more from 2011-2012.

?New York remained the nation's most populous city, at 8.3 million, with the rest of the top 10 unchanged. Austin, Texas, moved up from 13th to 11th, supplanting Jacksonville, Fla.; Indianapolis slipped from 12th to 13th.

MessageMe chat app amasses 5 million users in 75 days across Android and iOS

Between WhatsApp, Viber, Google+ Hangouts and a raft of others, the mobile messaging app space is crowded, but recent entrant MessageMe has still managed to make notable headway. After a mere 75 days since its launch, the application has amassed 5 million registered users, up from 1 million in its first ten days. Now, the software is churning out an average of 1,500 notifications per second and handling approximately eight image uploads each second.

For the uninitiated, the app is attempting to woo chatty folks on Android and iOS away from its rivals with the ability to send pictures, doodles, videos, audio, music and location information between two people or a group of friends. Sticker- and money-sending features are poised to bring home the bacon for the firm, but CEO and co-founder Arjun Sethi recently told The Next Web that it doesn't plan to activate them just yet, as it's focusing on attracting more users first. If you're itching for another outlet to dispatch notes to pals, hit the bordering more coverage links to grab MessageMe.

Unity game engine goes free for iOS and Android, BB10 and WP8 to follow

Unity game engine goes free for iOS and Android, BB10 and WP8 to followUnity, the multiplatform game engine, has gone free to use for iOS and Android. The company made the announcement at its Unite Nordic conference in Malm?, Sweden, according to Keith Andrew of PocketGamer.

Unity started life as a Mac-specific development platform, but nowadays developers can also create content using Windows PCs, and deploy on a total of ten different platforms including the Web. Up until now, delivering content onto iOS or Android platforms has required you to pay $800, regardless of which license you're using.

Unity said it plans to offer the same deal for developers interested in deploying to Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 platforms as well.

Unity helps game developers create 2D and 3D games alike. It's the engine that powers games like Madfinger's Dead Trigger 2, Rovio's Bad Piggies, Imangi's Temple Run 2, and many others.

The company has long offered "Unity Free" and "Unity Pro" licenses in order to accommodate indie developers. Unity Free is a "no strings attached" deal - you can use the tech to develop your game without paying any royalties or license fees. Once you start raking in money, you're required to upgrade to the Pro license, which costs money. The Pro license also includes access to a number of functions and features that aren't accessible for free - graphics and audio improvements, 3D modeling enhancements and more.

Developers who have recently forked out the cash to deploy to iOS and Android will be eligible for discounts to help recoup their costs.

Coffee Cuts Your Liver Disease Risk + 10 More Coffee Health Benefits

Coffee latte with a perfect foam heart (because it's good for you!)

It amazes me how often I hear people casually remark that they drink ?too much??coffee, and really should cut back for their health. While caffeine in coffee can have adverse effects on some, coffee per se isn?t bad for you. It actually has tons of health benefits, from helping ease depression to cutting your risk of Alzheimer?s and liver disease.

That last one is newly known?the result of recent Mayo Clinic study. In research presented this week, the team showed how regular coffee drinking can cut one?s risk of developing a destructive liver disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).

PSC is an auto-immune condition that can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, liver failure and bile duct cancer.

?While rare, PSC has extremely detrimental effects,? said lead study author Craig Lammert, a Mayo Clinic?gastroenterologist.??We?re always looking for ways to mitigate risk, and our first-time finding points to a novel environmental factor that also might help us to determine the cause of this and other devastating autoimmune diseases.?

Here are 10 more ways that coffee is good for you:

  1. It can help your blood?vessels?dilate, allowing for better flow of oxygen and blood through the body and brain.
  2. ?It can help prevent mouth and throat cancers.
  3. It can help women?especially overweight women?stave off endometrial cancer.
  4. Coffee may help reduce the risk of skin cancer.
  5. It has?anti-depressive effects?and?can?improve your mood.?
  6. Coffee drinking has been linked to better heart health.
  7. It can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  8. It may protect your brain from dementia.
  9. It may help you get more from your workouts.
  10. It?s been?linked to greater longevity.

Xbox One runs three operating systems, including cut-down Windows for apps

Xbox One runs three operating systems, including cutdown Windows for apps

The latest update out of the currently unfolding announcement in Redmond: the next-generation Xbox will run three operating systems simultaneously. Complementing Windows 8 and RT on PCs and tablets, there'll be a third distinct version of Microsoft's operating system that has been pared down specifically for the new console. This will be the main system OS used to run apps such as Skype and other non-game titles downloaded from the Xbox storefront. At the same time, virtualization technology similar to Microsoft's Hyper-V will be used to allocate the bulk of system resources to a second, dedicated "Xbox OS" when the user loads up a game. This game OS will remain a fixed entity throughout the life of the console, so that game developers can be confident their games will run regardless of how much the Windows side of the machine gets updated. Finally, the third OS sounds like a small layer to assist with the virtualization, allowing the two main personalities of the console to talk to each other. Read on for more.

Joy Huber: 5 Things Angelina Jolie Teaches Us About Cancer

This past week, I, along with many many others, was quite frankly shocked to hear the breaking news that Angelina Jolie had a preventive double mastectomy upon finding (quoted from her op-ed): "I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer."

As more details have been revealed, I have reflected on what one of the world's most beautiful and most recognizable women has taught us recently about cancer.

1. It can happen to anyone. Truly no one is immune to the big c; cancer just doesn't care how old, young, rich, or poor you are. It strikes celebrities, and people just like you and me.

2. It impacts all of us. I hear repeatedly the statistic that one in two men and one in three women will face cancer in their life. If it's not impacting you today, it will at some point. I certainly don't share this to strike fear in you. This is simply reality.

3. Looking at the previous two, I say with confidence we all want to prevent it. Just like Angelina so wanted to prevent or at least greatly reduce her risk, I believe we're all interested in how we can prevent cancer. But the question that needs to be raised is, Are we committed to preventing cancer? Here I think not. For if you are interested in something you'll do it when it's convenient I've heard, and if you're committed to something, you'll do it. Period. A quote I love!

We all do things every day that we know raise our risk of cancer (smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise, to name just a few!). If you are interested in (and committed to!) learning more about how to prevent breast cancer, please check out this resource.

If you are wondering like so many whether you'll face breast cancer some day I came across this interesting tool that says it is "an interactive tool to help estimate a woman's risk of developing breast cancer." This is from the National Cancer Institute.

Also, months before Jolie's news this press release was published stating "three federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury have issued a set of FAQs clarifying BRCA testing as a preventive service under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Importantly, this clarification will allow for BRCA testing to be completed with no patient cost sharing for all non-grandfathered private insurance plans when an asymptomatic woman has a qualifying family history." Another reason to cheer health reform!

4. Support from family and friends during the cancer journey is critical. Angelina's article says, "I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition." Those fighting cancer and those supporting them can receive free 1:1 cancer support here. This is another helpful resource I share for young cancer spouses.

5. Finally, finding joy in the journey is essential! Whether you are at stage 1 or stage 4 cancer, all cancers are shocking and terrifying. No one feels joy at diagnosis as I know first-hand from being diagnosed Wednesday, March 24th, 2010. Yet in the paragraph where Angelina talks about Brad, she says, "We managed to find moments to laugh together."

I'm not sure Angelina would have ever had to disclose what she chose to share. What do you think -- she could have kept the secret, right? But, because of her being so willing to share something publicly that's so extremely personal, she has certainly taught many around the world so very much about cancer.

Do you think it's helpful to find joy and laugh where you can during the cancer journey? What can it hurt? I wholeheartedly believe it can and does help!

This is why our theme at "Cancer with JOY" is, "No one is happy they have cancer! But you can have cancer and still be happy!"

I have begun sharing a "Daily Dose of Joy" via Facebook and Twitter. As I said when I announced it, the "Daily Dose of JOY" will bring "Do's & Don'ts, #cancerresources, #cancernews, #cancersupport, jokes and MORE! Please let those you know fighting cancer know about this so we can bring some much-needed JOY into their journey!

Sports briefs: Nadal dominates Federer to win Italian Open | The Salt ...

Tennis ? After all these years, Rafael Nadal still knows how to dominate Roger Federer.

In the 30th meeting between the tennis greats, Nadal controlled the final from the start and won 6-1, 6-3 Sunday for his seventh Italian Open title in Rome.

Nadal improved to 20-10 in his career against Federer.

In the women?s final, Serena Williams won her fourth consecutive title of the year in impressive fashion, defeating third-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3. The top-ranked American will go to Paris on a career-best 24-match winning run.

Indianapolis 500 will sport full field

Auto Racing ? One day after getting bumped from the top 24 starting spots for the Indianapolis 500, Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal posted the two fastest times on the second and final day of qualifying at the historic 2.5-mile oval.

Newgarden will start 25th, the inside of the ninth row, after posting a four-lap average of 225.731 mph. Rahal will be next to him after going 225.007.

The first nine drivers out on the track Sunday all qualified for the race, assuring race organizers of a full 33-car field. The only one left out of the race Mexico?s Michel Jourdain Jr., who did not make a qualifying attempt Sunday.

Leipheimer says he?s retired

CYCLING ? Rowland Hall graduate Levi Leipheimer says he retired from professional cycling when his six-month ban for doping violations ended March 1 and he was unable to sign with a new team.

Leipheimer told The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, Calif., of his decision Sunday. His comments came after watching the final stage of the Tour of California, an event he won three straight times from 2007-2009.

The 39-year-old Leipheimer, from Butte, Mont., was fired by the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team in October after confessing to doping as part of the investigation that brought down Lance Armstrong.

? Tejay van Garderen stayed out of trouble to seal his first professional stage race title, winning the Tour of California in front of BMC Racing Team?s home fans. The American cruised through the smooth and scenic final stage from San Francisco to Santa Rosa to edge Australia?s Michael Rogers for the overall title by 1 minute, 47 seconds.

Car drives into a crowd at Appalachian Trail hikers' parade

Car drives into a crowd at a parade in Virginia Saturday. The car, driven by an elderly man, injured 50 to 60 people, but there were no fatalities in the crowd.

Hiker "Quinoa" is given credit for saving the lives of Carson Balckburn, Dalton Thomason, and Faith Ritchie after he ran them and others off the road with a water gun during a festival parade in Damascus, Va., Saturday, May 18, 2013. Second later, a car came down the road and struck several people.

An elderly driver plowed into dozens of hikers marching in a Saturday parade in a small Virginia mountain town and investigators were looking into whether he suffered a medical emergency before the accident.

About 50 to 60 people suffered injuries ranging from critical to superficial, but no fatalities were reported. Three of the worst injured were flown by helicopter to area hospitals. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

Another 12 to 15 victims were taken to hospitals by ambulance and the rest were treated at the scene, where some paramedics and other first-responders were participating in the parade.

It happened Saturday afternoon in the hamlet of Damascus, during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail, a majestic hiking route through the Appalachian Mountains that spans 14 states from Georgia to Maine.

Damascus Police Chief Bill Nunley didn't release the driver's name or age but said he was participating in the parade and he had traversed the Appalachian Trail in the past. Multiple witnesses described him as an elderly man.

Nunley said the man's 1997 Cadillac was one of the last vehicles in the parade and the driver might have suffered an unspecified medical problem when his car accelerated to about 25 mph (40 kph) and struck the crowd on a two-lane bridge along the town's main road. The driver was among those taken to hospitals.

"It is under investigation and charges may be placed," Nunley said.

Witnesses said the car had a handicapped parking sticker and it went more than 100 feet (30 meters) before coming to a stop.

"He was hitting hikers," said Vickie Harmon, a witness from Damascus. "I saw hikers just go everywhere."

Amanda Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car, where she and others lifted the car off those pinned underneath.

"Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she said.

Keith Neumann, a hiker from South Carolina, said he was part of the group that scrambled around the car. They pushed the car backward to free a woman trapped underneath and lifted it off the ground to make sure no one else was trapped.

"There's no single heroes. We're talking about a group effort of everybody jumping in," he said.

Nunley cited quick action by police, firefighters, paramedics and hikers to tend to the victims, including a volunteer firefighter who dove into the car to turn off the ignition. The firefighter, whose name wasn't released, suffered minor injuries.

Mayor Jack McCrady encouraged people to attend the festival on Sunday, its final day.

"In 27 years of this, we've never had anything of this magnitude, and is it our job to make sure it doesn't happen again," he said.

Selena Gomez Billboard Awards Dress Looks Like A 'Spring Breakers' Costume (PHOTOS)

Surely Selena Gomez knew all eyes would be on her at the Billboard Music Awards. While the whole world wondered why the singer would be seated next to her on-again, off-again boyfriend, we were a little more distracted by her outfit.

Selena showed up in a skintight white Atelier Versace gown... accessorized with glow sticks? On closer inspection, we realized Gomez' dress featured neon trim, perhaps a nod to the DayGlo brights she sported in March's "Spring Breakers" -- and her ponytail and flyaway strands would certainly be welcome on the beach. A sheer panel cut from collarbone to hip added requisite sex appeal, and zipper embellishments toughened up the look.

What do you think of Selena's "Spring Breakers"-esque Billboard Awards dress?
